Out of fear of losing face, shyness, etc. they never actively attempted to get involved with girls in school, so a protagonist who was more pro-active wouldn't resonate with them. It was sloppy and the episodes had a really awkward flow. Like they tried to go 1:1 but somehow couldn't fit everything in, resulting in badly chopped episodes, while they could've just removed some less important scenes and have the episodes be more fluid.
Animation suffered from time to time too, like you had a scene which was either great to decent (Guts vs Griffith, Whales, shit like that) and then some horrid garbage. Like they took material done by two different studios and mashed it together.
