Because it portrays one of the shittiest, most heinious armies on earth as if it's a peace force. Whenever JSDF or IJA fights they commit war crimes. Back in WWII they were ISIS v0.40, the only reason they are still a sovereign nation and not a page in history is they got nuked twice for their troubles and learned to be the bitch of the real superpowers.

The only issue i have is with some plot elements that make this less believable.
No foreign troops/observers etc. and the dumb plot leading to the hotspring shootout. Stuff like that simply wouldnt happen.

To everyone who is buttfrustrated over the depiction of the USA and the US Army in Gate, all I can say is that this is probably karmic justice for the depiction of Japan and the JSDF by Tom Clancy in Debt of Honor.
In this book, Japan builds their own nuclear warheads and ICBMs to deliver them (in an age where the USA and USSR have reduced their own stocks), then sends the JMSDF to invade the Marianas while "accidentally" launching cruise missiles at US aircraft carriers to cripple the Pacific Fleet. Then they use a computer virus to crash the US stock exchange and at the same time had the chairman of the Federal Reserve assassinated.
The end goal of this was that they wanted to ally with China (FUCKING CHINA) and rebuild the Greater East Asian Co Prosperity Sphere, with China getting Siberia and Japan getting SEA. Yes, USA and USSR are somehow on the same side against Japan.
This was all in revenge for American consumers losing confidence in Japanese cars after a Honda exploded on the freeway thanks to a defective gas tank, which somehow crashed the whole Japanese economy.
Also the Japanese politician being used as the figurehead by the greedy zaibatsu evil Japanesenessmen who indicated the war is a perverted old man who kidnaps and rapes blonde American girls.
Then it turns out to all have been for nothing because the Americans just pretend the stock market crash didn't happen and then rape the JSDF six ways to Sunday using stealth fighters, stealth bombers, and stealth choppers, then the glorious CIA puts a missile through the evil Japanese businessman's window.
Then at the end of the book a Japan Airlines pilot kamikazes his 747 into the Capitol during a joint session of Congress and kills the whole government.
