He was a jack of all trades. He was never not as brilliant as Yang, not as good in combat as the Rosenritters, not as good of a pilot as Poplan, and so on. He relied on the skills of those that Yang brought together.

Isn't that a speculation as well? He didn't have a connection to the earth cult and he hold his grudge against Yang instead of Reinhard. Of course being a doctor's son he might've had access to poison. Honestly, I had arrived at the same conclusion a few times since Reinhard didn't get sick before he met him but it might just as well just be a sickness. Many rulers have been beaten by history's worst killer before him.

Julian had more actual character development than anyone else in the series.
Yang was the same in his first episode as his last episode. Reinhard only moderately changed.

He didn't develop shit and he was a predictable character from start to finish. Just another typecast anime character. The Iserlohn brigade or whatever isn't actually that ridiculous, literally everyone around Yang was constantly telling him to just sieze control and reform. Ultimately yang was forced into his autocratic role as he was made an enemy of his homeland and he couldn't happily live under the Kaiser's rule. That left only one option, which the Yang-gang heavily greased.
Thinking about it some more, the fact that Yang left the Merkatz fleet as an ace up his sleeve shows that he probably isn't as passive as i made him out to be.
Thing to remember is that Yang was the real democracy drinker of the fleet. It's questionable however if the Yang fleet was loyal to democracy or to Yang more.

The characters didn't have to develop all that much. Do you become a new person every time you get a new job or go to a new place? The story isn't about tigers changing their stripes. The characters all go through changing circumstances and stay true to themselves dealing with it.

Yang was the only one with a real hard on for democracy. The rest of them thought it was a nice ideal but were willing to follow Yang even if he declared himself dictator for life. All of Yang's inner circle were fanatically loyal to him, personally. Some members of his staff had outstanding grudges against the Empire, but those essentially died with the Goldenbaum dynasty. Their enmity for Reinhard and his empire was basically groundless, hence why their rebellion was done out of foppery and whim.

You as the viewer have an almost omnipotent view of the story. For you to make an impact in the story you will have to be an ace pilot military tactician who is on good terms with everyone, this as a viewer you know and is what you would wish for if you were in the story. But you have positive mannerisms that are not in other characters in the story. And you get angry on behalf of characters and you tell them to rest because you know that they are tired or have a lot in their minds other times. So you save the day while not taking over the whole story one small step at a time. That's the train of thought behind this sort of self-insert.
