Why don't these characters ever get straight to the point? Kizu would have come out sooner if they did.
>>
>>135312047
Because Gaen is literally the worst girl of 2015 and a direct violation of the golden rule of storytelling, "show, don't tell." Two fucking episodes of "telling."
>>
I'd fuck gaen til she tells me the truth

that no one can beat the cock
>>
>>135312047
Gaen a cute.
>>
That's the fucking poin in monogatari.
It's a show about TALKING.
>>
>>135312572
She'd tell you right away since she knows everything so she knows she can't beat the cock.

Unless she wants to get fucked.
>>
>>135312572
You know what I would do? I would ask Gaen one simple question and that if she could answer me honestly then I would submit myself to her "friendship".

"Has your infinite knowledge ever shown you Tooe getting nailed by her partner?"
>>
>>135312047
It wasn't her problem, but it would be a nuiseance so she only stay aware of the outcome till raragi
realize what to do (it was his problem and something he needed to deal), if not, that's why she called Episode.

Still, Meme was aware, the problem is that he could't do a shit thanks to the barrier.
>>
>make adaptation of light novels
>cut things out
How do you think people would react, OP?
>>
>>135312047
>Monogatari
>Getting straight to the point about anything.
>>
>>135312047
My immediate counterpoint would be, we wouldn't get two full pages describing a highschool girl's underwear if Nisioisin ever made the characters more straightforward. Not to mention the other scene near the end of the Kizu. I like my elaboration.
>>
Here's my take on this, and the whole series as a whole:

First of all, Monogatari is based on a series of novels in which the author relies heavily on speech patterns to establish characters.

Secondly, the whole series is based on and tainted by Araragi Koyomi's perception of characters and events. The anime in particular is largely focused on getting us to feel the way he feels when things are going on. The conversation with Gaen goes on for two annoying episodes because Koyomi finds dealing with her tedious and annoying. She breaks the rules, as >>135312489 says, because she's calculated to be jarring and make us uncomfortable.

We get two pages describing underwear, like >>135316110 describes, because Koyomi is a pervy teenager for whom seeing a girl's underwear is a big deal and he's fixated on it.

The examples go on and on - Hanekawa always shows up at the right moment, with the right words to say and an attitude that makes you feel like everything might be OK after all, because that's the version of her Koyomi perceives. Ononoki is enigmatic and strangely alluring because that's how he sees her, Crab's harshness fades as his attitude warms up to her, Monkey goes from sexy, wild and violent to silly, cute and endearing as he gets attached to her, etc.

The ways characters are so different when we see them away from Araragi aren't the result of them acting totally different so much as they are the only windows we get into their real personalities and emotions, viewed without Koyomi's rose-tinted lens.
>>
>>135316686
>because Koyomi is a pervy teenager for whom seeing a girl's underwear is a big deal and he's fixated on it.
Let's not pretend this is the only reason for the fanservice.
>>
>>135316808
>Let's not pretend this is the only reason for the fanservice.
Since it is just words on a page, it is not really that sexy until it was animated. Much like how the bath scenes didn't amount to any fap material when it is just in novel form. There wasn't even any matching illustrations.
>>
>>135316897
It's written with the knowledge it will be animated. Most LNs are written with an anime adaption in mind, even if it doesn't happen or just gets one season.
>>
>>135316897
>it is not really that sexy until it was animated
Plenty of people can find descriptions sexy. That's why erotica became such a big genre in literature in the late 19th, early 20th centuries. Your loss if you can't.
>>
>>135312489
Gaen literally tells Koyomi and the audience nothing they didn't already know except that she confirms the armor is Seishirou. The entire rest of the speech is her trashing the the rest of the girls and, especially, Hanekawa - who was starting her Tiger rampage, which is something the audience knows that Koyomi doesn't. And of course there's what >>135316686 says in that you aren't supposed to like Gaen. She's dangerous and manipulative. Like Ougi but human
>>
>>135317108
The sexy scenes in Monogatari are not described very erotically, though. You're right about communicating eroticism through text but Nisio doesn't make any effort to do it.
>>
>>135317245
But I like Ougi, she's cute and spooky
>>
Does Nisio have a thing for smart girls or something? Senjogahara, Shinobu and Hanekawa, the three girls the stories focus on the most, are all way smarter than Koyomi in one way or another.
>>
>>135317873
Probably, Zaregoto for example most girls are geniuses, and Katanagatari Shichika was dumb compared to most characters like Togame and Nanami.

Basically the only girl who is clearly dumber than Araragi is Karen. Araragi is the best in math at least.
>>
>>135317873
Dunno if he does, but I certainly do, maybe it's why I like the series and Hanekawa in particular. (I've written about this on here before, but while I think Hanekawa wasn't a great character in the show and was bad for Koyomi, I like her because I feel like she and I would be a good match.)
>>
>>135318483
Karen is just an impulsive kid, I don't think it's right to call her stupid.

Monkey seems dumber than Koyomi, but we've also seen her be surprisingly intuitive and perceptive and it's totally possible that the whole thing is just an act.

I think Snake might be legitimately stupid, though, but it's hard to tell what's intelligence there and what's just the result of being batshit crazy.
>>
>>135318483
I have always thought that tsukihi is very stupid. i mean, all her character is overreact
>>
>>135318483
I hate how good they look together, but then I guess Araragi looks good with any girl. Except Shinobu.
>>
>>135318691
He said smarter in some way, and Snake did manipulate him for a fair while.
>>135318769
I was going to say Karen and Tsukihi, but I was not sure if Tsukihi revealed that much about herself.
>>
>>135318691
I'm pretty sure Karen is canon dumb.
>>
>>135312047
Gaen = Monkey = Doll > the rest
>>
>>135318769
I was actually considering saying that too, but don't really feel that I know enough about her to make that judgement. She certainly hasn't given much sign of intelligence.

>>135318928
I feel like Araragi got manipulated more out of his own stupidity and thinking with his dick than by anything particularly savvy that Snake did.
>>
All the specialists need way more focus.

Please Nisio, stop writing books about side girls and give us the college days of the occult research club.
>>
>>135318769
>>135319036
Tsukihi knows that Nadeko's shrinking violet act is an act, which makes her the only person besides Shinobu to figure that out before she goes psychotic. She's lazy and disinterested as fuck, so she probably isn't super well-educated, but Tsukihi's got some good intuition. Pretending to be human takes a lot of work.
>>
>>135318691
Snake isn't stupid. She's crazy

But when I see Ougi I feel she is helping Koyomi not manipulating it like >>135316686 said
>>
>>135321901
With only Owari you can't tell if she is helping or not Araragi, but she is definitely manipulating him in the process. The times she makes him think he said something to her he clearly didn't are there to show that.
>>

>>
>>135323649

Have you heard about capitalization?
>>
>>135320005
Shinobu is pretty knowledgeable and has good intuition, but that gets crippled by her vanity because she'll stop thinking if her current conclusion satisfies it. I think she has been trying to change that since the end of Shinobu Mail.
>>
>>135323970
>Shinobu is pretty knowledgeable and has good intuition, but that gets crippled by her vanity because she'll stop thinking if her current conclusion satisfies it.
It doesn't help that she is so powerful she never had to think before she act. For example, with the time travelling arc she never considers the possibility of needing to go back to the original timeline. Because why is it a problem? She is immortal, if she can't go back to the future she could just wait a decade to go back the slow way.
>>
>>135319369
>Tsukihi knows that Nadeko's shrinking violet act is an act, which makes her the only person besides Shinobu to figure that out before she goes psychotic

Isn't she the only person who is close to Nadeko?
>>
>>135316971
>It's written with the knowledge it will be animated
I highly doubt Nisio expected people to even read it
>>
>>135324434
I don't know about that, but when he wrote the scene in question, Nisio didn't think it was possible for the series to get an anime adaptation.
>>
>>135312047

Compared to the Ougi formula, I felt that the Shinobu arc was such a disappointment! especially in story and pacing.

Not "smart girls".
But overpowered girls.
Every single of his works has extremely overpowered girls.
Medaka Box? Medaka and Ajimu.
Zaregoto? Aikawa Jun and pretty much every single other girl.
Monogatari? Shinobu, Hanekawa, and, hell, every other girl too.
Katanagatari? Nanami, Togami and Hitei.
>>
>>135319369
she doesn't know that she's a phoenix right?
>>
>>135326549
And the thing is that they're not only overpowered.
But THE strongest in their own universes.
>>

What a long winded explanation, just like Gaen. But anyway, the best character is Kaiki. He fixes Crab's problem and makes them out to be a bunch of dramatic teenagers with his POV
>>
>>135319369
>Nadeko's shrinking violet act is an act
It's not, though. The way she acts is a bit manipulative, but that's not the same thing as it being an act. It's more like she's milking it to make her life easier. She is genuinely shy and dislikes contact with other people.
>>
I have to say that Monkey "development"/exposition was fantastic.
She is now tied with Snail in my ranking.

>>
>>135326940
Haha, I've mentioned before that I seem to start writing like Monogatari dialog when writing about Monogatari, and I guess I kind of did it again there.

But that's a good point about Kaiki, and it kind of meshes with what I was saying. His radically different perception of events supports my theory that a lot of what we're presented with as fact is in fact Araragi Koyomi's own interpretation of things and not a straightforward depiction of what's actually going on.
>>
>>135328665
Man, I could use some of those private math lessons, and I don't even mean what you mean. I'm god-awful at math, but I've always had the habit of suddenly getting much better at learning things when a cute girl is watching.

I read it wrongly, not as in people who are useless do direct charity to feel good about themselves.

Young Sodachi hid all of herself during those lessons when teaching Araragi math, and the friendship he believed they had was made him start to enjoy life. If she was honest it would probably not work that way.
>>

It is. Meme does the same thing in Bake, Kaiki in Hana, and Kagenui in Tsuki. This is no different and I have no idea why people keep repeating it so much. Yeah, I'm not gonna go so far as to agree with you on that one, anon. As somebody who is studying a degree that would be considered 25% Arts, the typical Arts student ain't all that smart. >>135331286
Oh god, this. I used to do PR for an engineering firm, and the owner was a brilliant engineer and also great at hands-on work, but whenever he'd try to write something I'd have to completely redo it, because it sounded like a 6th grader trying to write a movie trailer.

The worst part was having to tell him that the shit he wrote made him sound stupid without telling him he sounded stupid, because he was writing my checks.
>>
>>135331419
Average everything is kind of retarded, be it an art student or an engineer student. Especially true if you have your own particular definition of smart, in which somehow either the ability to write a literary piece or to solve math problems is more relevant than the other.

Why the fuck hasn't a kiss with Senjogahara been animated yet? We got bird, doll and snail but not Araragi's own gf? The hell

this is why this show never gets to the point.

this show is essentially bullshit philosophizing that appeals to middle schoolers who aspire to be angsty intelligentsia

to prove this point: ask yourself what happens in a single episode of these shit shows

it's like 1 or 2 things, total
>>
>>135335732

it's inane philosophizing + super hot moe girls to sell it

That has more to do with pacing than being smart or "pseudo-"smart.

Not to mention there are episodes that a lot happen and episodes that almost nothing happens, does that mean that some episodes are smart and others not?
>>
>>135335855
i would say that none of these episodes are smart or incisive on the human character

absolutely right that this is more about pacing than perceived level of intelligence. but i feel like the pacing of this show is based around the fact that it tries to stimulate you intellectually. instead i find myself revulsed that something like this can be even seen as remotely intelligent or incisive. and then even more repulsed when a lot of the plot is based on araragi hating himself and feeling guilty for everything and then needing to fix that

somehow all these loops make the girls seem SUPER HOT
>>

But how is this Nisio's fault?
As a writer isn't his job to be as descriptive as necessary while it's the animation studio's job to translate that into a scene?
>>
>>135335732
As time went on I've noticed:
What kind of kids are these?

I get the specialists talking like this but everyone in high and middle school all talk like they're philosophers
>>
>>135336225
it just means he's a 'bad' writer by some standards. for me, sometimes telling is fine. but if people were 'shown' his stories, i feel like they would be bored. araragi goes into house with a girl. finds a thing. then leaves with girl as his friend

Media is never representative of how "real" conversations occur. How you're just noticing this now astounds me.

Man finished Owari vol 3 few days ago and it was fucking solid, though that's my opinion. The whole first part of Araragi hanging out at avīci was enjoyable considering Mayoi met up with him to lead him higher. Kind of amusing how Araragi will always be doomed to end up there after death for saving Kiss-shot, but when all his events in his life being shown that someone else being able to do it all, Araragi doesn’t give a shit and would do them all over again. Anyway the part when he meets up with Tadatsuru which turns out due to the curse he was sent to hell, but he lives on anyway on earth through his dolls. You learn other cool shit, but main thing is Oshino predicted the events to transpire. Oshino guessed that someone would hire him to kill Araragi, so Gaen and Oshino along with Tadatsuru made plans. As Araragi gets revived, he ends up grabbing onto Mayoi and brining her back to life which surprised Gaen. Was interesting that two minutes in reality passed while Araragi was at avīci, oh and Kiss-shot was holding on to Gaens neck if Araragi wasn’t revived in time, she was about to snap it.

Sorry, a lot of fanservice before.
Owari was boring in general, it gave me a different viewpoint.

>Media is never representative of how "real" conversations occur.
Obviously never and I always looked at it as a choice between making the reader feel smart and having the reader relate

Gets weird for me here as Araragi goes and does his entrance exam; he then does a date with Hitagi as its white day. Wasn’t that interested in it besides the fact how out of touch Hitagi is with the shit that goes on with Araragi most of the time. Of course that makes sense with her character as the human who wants nothing to do with that world ever. At the end Ougi out of nowhere and is at his home being all spooky. Of course Spooky asks peculiar things, which ends with Spooky asking Araragi for help on its side against Gaen. Then Ougi Dark begins which is a load of ‘fun’. Chapter 2 was an amusement to read, Araragi ends up walking to see Kiss-shot, Gaen and Mayoi playing baseball. Kiss-shot the batter who was using the sword as a bat, Gaen who was the pitcher throwing rocks as balls and Mayoi being the catcher. Turns out they weren’t playing baseball as Araragi assumed, but instead cricket in a way it really wasn’t. Kiss-shot was the first one to notice him watching this strange thing and she rushed to him in happiness and swinged him around with one arm. Interesting note was Araragi calling her Shinobu instead of Kiss-shot throughout the LN. He also was insecure as he thought Kiss-shot was happy to be a full body away from Araragi, but that was wrong and the shit she was doing was revenge play for the things Araragi did to her in child form.

When Gaen is about to do her ‘explanation’, Kiss-shot grabs Araragi, makes him sit on her lap and hugs him while putting her head on his head as he did to her. He later does a comparison that she does it elegantly compared to the way he did. The whole Gaen portion was interesting while it wasn’t, it had two things going on. Her saying the shit you already know and then things you didn’t which was informative such as talking about her sister and what she went through. Still on the whole turn Kiss-shot into a god, hell the main reason she killed Araragi was to make him human and her full again to try and reduce the bond so she or him would accept it. This didn’t work due to their relationship was unbreakable; one of the reasons Kiss-shot is hugging Araragi the way she is some kind of compensation for the broken bond. Of course Kiss-shot whispers in his ear that there is a way around it in that girl, which was Mayoi. God damn convenient as that suited Gaens replacement for a new god. Loved other moments when Kiss-shot got angry and said stuff due to Araragi getting sad when being reminded events by Gaen. Such as that whole Nadeko fiasco.

Then after that whole segment it gets great when Araragi goes to confront Ougi to defeat it. I loved this shit as the discussion between them was great to read with my somewhat meh comprehension of moon runes. Ougi cuts deep into Araragi throughout, one interesting note I found was while Ougi was throwing events in his face, one of them was the decision to go fight first for Shinobu, or go save Hanekawa/Hitagi. Ougi gives Araragi shit for lying about not hesitating at that choice when he did heavily on who to choose. Honestly loved this whole portion, after Araragi gets through the whole thing, Ougi is satisfied and the darkness appears to take out Spooky. So Ougi go to kill its Spooky self, which Araragi says sorry and shall do something greedy for himself, which he go saving Ougi. Ends up with a graze from the true darkness, which really wasn’t since his whole arm was gone. With blood everywhere and impending death with the darkness, the main nigga Oshino rolls up and saves them by saying that Ougi was his niece. Which means no lie as Oshino acknowledges that as fact, which means Darkness peace’s out. Everything is solved.

Nah damn that.

At the end Araragi and Kiss-shot rebond as Araragi has no interest in being human and without her while she enjoys being with him no matter what. So in my view Araragi threw his last chance to have a normal life ever. As Araragi, Hanekawa and Hitagi go to grab their high school graduation stuff, Araragi sees someone and tells those two to go ahead and get his for him. The person he goes to meet that he seen was Ougi. Bang all over. Honestly was enjoyable to read, though did kind of dislike how everything conveniently was concluded. Not sure why I ended up posting this shit, might be the drinks. The fact I had to break this shit up as I got carried away, oh well. Fuck it. No regrets.

I'm not saying it is his "fault" in any way. It's the way he tells his stories, it is his writing style and it's the way Nisio has been developing his characters and certain events throughout the entire series.
It just baffles me that, in a series well-known for its long-winded dialogue, which relies on said dialogue as a major storytelling/exposition element, people are complaining about "muh show don't tell." I can only boil it down to people who started watching with Owari just because the spooky Ougi meem

Because dialogue doesn't mean telling. Dialogue that reveals the plot by talking about other things or slowly working things out is great and Monogatari has a lot of that. The issue is when a character straight info-dumps the plot for an extended period of time and Gaen is frequently guilty of that.
