It wasn't the melodrama that I had a problem with, but the excessive display of emotion.
WataShin should have been above all of this. Take Ed's leaving in Cowboy Bebop for example, there was no tearful goodbye or mawkish speeches, she just painted some words on the deck of the bebop and left. It was subtle.
The first half of Apollon was handled pretty gracefully and it was witty. I really enjoyed it. The second half had a lot less subtle acting and more characters shouting at each other to get their point across, and crying and all that. It was really disappointing.

The hasty time skip aside, it isn't dialogue that drives the scene, the music speaks for itself. I don't recall there being many lines between them or Ritsuko after the time skip.
