Most of the people that buy manga in Japan are young kids. TG is serialized in a seinen magazine, which is not a popular demographic, that normally uses difficult kanji and has no furigana over its text so they tend to avoid it. SnK is serialized in a shounen magazine so anyone can buy and read it. The themes aren't that hard to understand anyway either unlike in TG.
