Why isn't Golgo 13 as popular as Lupin the 3rd? Golgo is way more deserving of new series and movies.
>>
Popular where?
>>
>>135160330
Lack of Jigen.
>>
>>135160386
In Japan I suppose, Considering he's still getting new series and movies.
>>
>>135160789
Wikipedia has it at the second most sold volumes of all time behind OP. Saying that it's not as popular is pretty absurd. I guess animators or directors are just more interested in the series.
>>
>>135160330
Golgo is pretty fucking popular. It just doesn't have the mass appeal lupin does because the all the sex, the murder, and violence.
>>
>>135161486

Golgo also lacks Lupin's energy/charisma, do his assasinations ever get a hiccup during them? plus no matter what M16 WILL FIND A WAY
>>
>>135160872
>>135161486
Didn't know that it was the second best selling manga of all time.

I'm eating up Golgo 13 right now, watched the movie and the OVA and currently the TV series and they're awesome whereas the first series of lupin was a chore to go through.
And I can't imagine it being good for another 200 episodes.

Gotta go with those. The movie was fucking great, except for that disgusting CG scene with the helicopters.

>do his assasinations ever get a hiccup during them?
My only exposure to golgo is like 40 episodes of the anime. The thing that bothered me about the anime is they tried to make the series more about his victims later on instead of just following him on the job. I can respect that a little but the people he met and the victims generally were the lamest part of the fucking series. I mean he literally hangs out in a bar one episode picks up on this drunk ass rich chick fucks her in his usual no passion way and then at the end he shows up to meet her and shoots her on the spot because she was his target. I mean thats Golgo 13 in a nutshell. I really should watch more of it. I grew up on action movies from the 80s and james bond so he's just great if you have a similar background to me.
>>
Does the manga actually have a continuing story? You'd think with nearly 180 volumes the author would run out of ideas.
And there are people that say that about Detective Conan.

From what I've heard its kind of just the on going story of the famous assassin who NEVER MISSES! The early manga had him fighting in like all the well known wars and of course he's been in the middle east here and there over the past few decades. But I think its more of a chronicle of the guy's life mainly not really an on going plot or anything.
>>
>>135162083
>The thing that bothered me about the anime is they tried to make the series more about his victims later on instead of just following him on the job.
No, that's literally what the manga does.
Sometimes there's hundreds of pages and he appears in like 5 of them.
Sometimes he doesn't appear at all.

>>135162271
The story is barely about Golgo at all. He's more like a plot device, a 100% successful killing tool.
>>
>>135162083
>My only exposure to golgo is like 40 episodes of the anime. The thing that bothered me about the anime is they tried to make the series more about his victims later on instead of just following him on the job.
Another Anon put it this way niccely:

Golgo 13 isn't a character, he's a plot device and you're there to see how (a) he shoots his target, and (b) see what other people do about it.

>I mean he literally hangs out in a bar one episode picks up on this drunk ass rich chick fucks her in his usual no passion way and then at the end he shows up to meet her and shoots her on the spot because she was his target.
I don't remember this episode.

I mean I can understand that to change up the pacing a little bit but I just couldn't stand it. The second half of the episodes is like all that. Your following joe smo and golgo is in a few scenes here and there and then the episode ends with golgo making some crazy shot killing some dude. It was just so detached.
>>
>>135160330
What I wouldn't give to have more of the manga translated, the artist's paneling sense is unparalleled.

I remember this one chapter where there are shots of Golgo in a desert, I felt like I was watching a feature film rather than reading manga. Gave me serious Lawrence of Arabia vibes.
>>
Goddamnit, I just watched this episode. Why did Golgo kill him, I didn't get that.
>>
Golgo doesn't appeal for typical anime/manga watchers.
It's more appealing for seniors.

The original Lupin manga is full of sex and violence, however it's a lot less serious than Golgo.
>>
>>135163709
Huh. That design reminds me of Pink Jacket Lupin in the first half of the series.
>>
>>135163746
Monkey Punch's art style had changed over the years. Pink Jacket took some inspiration from the second manga series in terms of character design.

>>135163337
Well, in the manga even when he rapes women they tend to end up loving it. He even cucks some dude in the Shin Lupin manga.

>>135162961
Both series are good for what they are.

The only thing that you need to remember is that there are multiple takes on Lupin III. There's the hard boiled, and the light hearted. I personally prefer hard boiled, but still enjoy the lighter take.

>>135162626
This, so much.
I have only read a bit of Golgo, and it would be great to have more translated but it's too niche for the West. I feel the same way about the rest of the Shin Lupin manga.
>>
>>135160386
I hear Golgo 13 is a household name in France. Luc Besson in particular has a huge boner for it.

I really enjoyed "The Professional" it managed to somewhat make him vulnerable and backed into a corner. As much as I like The character, I believe there should be more of this, and less perfect sniper. He's like the Japanese Parker, but way more boring even "flat" characters like Ogami Itto manage to be interesting. But in the end, as established he's a plot device more than anything else.

These pages do tell us a lot, he acted on pure reflex, and paid for it. In terms of his "origin" story, I like the one in which he supposedly came from a family of assassins, and he kills them all after he witnesses them drowning his mother who failed to carry out her task.

Since we're dealing with Hard boiled here, is there any City Hunter series that dampens the comedy? I can't stand "Mokkori."
>>
>>135166452
Yeah the Mokkori gets really annoying after the first couple of episodes.

That ED though
>GET WILD AND TOUGH

Angel Heart maybe? I've heard its set in some alternate future where Kaori dies and Ryo goes all serious as he assists the new female protag of that series.

Also I think "Till Death Do Us Part" has a tie in with it because it has Aegis and at least once iirc Ryo appear in it. Warning it has a blind modern day samurai who uses a katana with a molecular scale thin sharp blade hidden in his cane and he has sonar sunglasse and stuff and protects a loliHe literally takes down a tank somewhere around chapter 80ish iirc

Yeah, having started the anime, I found the hard boiled comedy of the manga really out there. I remember a story in which Lupin gets betrayed, and stabs everyone when he finds out. Zenigata arrives at the end, sees the corpses, and says something along the lines of "You messed with the wrong guy." The last panel is Lupin looking down from the ceiling and laughing.

I wish part IV was getting subs right now. It looks like a nice blend of hard boiled and light hearted, and the animation, soundtrack, designs are all top notch.

>>135167943
The Masaaki Ōsumi directed episodes of Green jacket have Lupin and co. killing goons left and right. It's awesome. It happens here and there in the later parts, but it mostly depends on who's writing the story. Everyone has their own ideal Lupin, and it's part of what makes it such a diverse and interesting franchise.

I love that chapter. What happens is some goon holds a woman hostage, and gets Lupin to commit multiple crimes. Larceny, assassination, and "rape". The goon and woman were in it together, and Lupin actually admired them for pulling it off, but they fucked up by having Inspector Zenigata show up, so he had to handle it as best as he could...by killing them and escaping. Don't fuck with Lupin is the moral of the story. Here's the page.

>new series

Golgo is still running(although the ending announcement was, what, last year?), it had something in essentially every decade till the new tens, hell, he even had a few live action movies and Sonny Chiba played him in some of them.

Lupin is just way more flexible and he can skirt the line between ruthless criminal(in his older portrayals as well as The Woman Called Fujiko Mine) and gallant rogue adventurer, which makes it easier to produce more things for him, and makes him more palatable for a little adventure movie every year or so.

He also has a consistent supporting cast so multiple characters can do the heavy lifting, and unlike Golgo the story is very willing to let him make mistakes, get knocked around, make an ass out of himself, and even fail or get beaten.

So you can have a story about him squaring off with an assassin, or spelunking around a pyramid for treasure, or just reading a book that quickly turns into an LSD trip, or participating in a car race.

Golgo is a cipher, a non-entity who acts as the agent of resolution. The story is about the people and what the fuck they're getting up to that needs a guy like Golgo to get involved, and finally how someone pulls off an impossible job that requires physics fuckery like bouncing a bullet off a pool or halation. He's not some tragic figure who's talented but emotionally crippled, nor is he lacking for respect at his assassin high school where they gave him the lowest rank possible but he's actually the best and they just won't grade him on his M16-jutsu, or some jackass that just lectures people on their lives.

On the other hand, nobody would blink at Lupin having a giant balloon rocket or a fleet of helicopters ready to haul his shit off. He's a Looney Tunes character with a bodycount. He can get involved in a wider variety of situations, hence, he's much more prolific in multiple mediums.
