The end goal of their plans was to take control of the Adam/Lilith hybrid using human instrumentality. Beyond that what they would have done with that power is completely different. Gendo was just going to forcibly bring Yui back to life or merge with her or something. SEELE wanted to do pretty much the same thing Shinji ended up doing.

depression is a numbing mechanism used to cope with an unpleasant reality. showing someone who's depressed how shitty being depressed is would (generally) only lead them to be even more depressed, rather than being the metaphorical stick to push them out into the real world. a more optimistic ending would perhaps include more support from family and friends and diminish the feeling that shinji is all alone in the world.

It was a metaphorical release. Infact, release is a big theme in the movie. The movie essentially "climaxes" at this point where everybody's souls are released from the pain and suffering attributed with living. Release was what Shinji was looking for. The first scene of the movie is also an example of this... Not to sound lewd, but it does fit.. At least in some vague imagery type of way that is hard to vocalize, but I definately noticed it.

OP I'd just thought you'd like to know that with episode 25 and 26 and EoE is that a lot of the themes in it are left up to interpretation because that's how Anno intended to leave it in the end. So whilst other anons offer their own interpretations in the end you have to make your own conclusion about Eva yourself
