Here for example you can see the detail of Michelle abs bulging through her suit. But something happened with the animation towards the end of the season and the quality dropped pretty badly.

I'm not disagreeing with you, that's why I though S1's staff should not have been replaced and that only the studio should've changed to Madhouse (or MAPPA), because the director and character designer have spent a lot of time at Madhouse and worked there not even a year prior on that horrible Iron Man movie/OVA.
The designs did justice to the manga but Liden Films couldn't do the designs justice; from the very first episode they had somebody credited for 'character design assistance' because they apparently had so much trouble with that level of detail.
There were some decent moments, yeah. Episodes 2 and 4 looked pretty good, and the second OVA actually surprised me with how polished it was. But apart from that Liden really dropped the fucking ball. The gifs you're linking from episode 5 had a lot of key animation done by Trigger staffers, but some scenes had some wonky undetailed moments as well.

But almost any studio would've been better than Liden (tiny, and had never produced a full-length series on their own), and Hiroshi Hamasaki has spent decades at Madhouse with a pretty impressive body of work.
