Not really. It's kind of a cool series but it tries to shoehorn in a fuck ton more philosophical imagery and references than it can really handle and ends up coming off as rather pretentious, and not in a buzzwordy way.
That said it looks great and has some cool characters and the actual plot, to me anyway, is interesting if a bit muddled at times.

I hate to use an amorphous word like atmosphere, but the truth is all the world building was done to specifically add depth to the characters or plot of the moment instead of creating something at large.

But rewatching the first episode, I think I was just really slow in realizing that it his kid that died at the start.

It's not your fault, it's too vague. The only way you're going to realize it immediately is if you catch his wife telling Vincent her husband is the Chief of the Security Bureau in the first episode. That's it. That, his frozen look during the mall scene, and him slamming his hand on the piano for a few seconds in anger, which if you didn't catch the name thing, you can easily misinterpret it. After that you get nothing of WHY Raul is struggling until the last episode. That's the problem with Ergo Proxy.

I think it's fine that they wanted to be subtle about it, but I did end up enjoying the series a lot more on a second viewing, now that I had more things pieced together.
Like the game show episode. Thought it was was an April Fool's joke on my first viewing, but after realizing that the host was a proxy screwing with their heads I think it's a humorous way of delivering exposition.
