It's just Urasawa going WE WUZ 70S SHOUJO N SHIET

>Manliest character by far.
>best girl
You mean best boy.

The problem being?

It's cheap
Aside from his humor and sexy girls, it doesn't feel very original. Like he sat on his butt watching WMTs and reading girls sports manga and saying 'I could do that'

>it doesn't feel very original.
That has never being important.
>>135139724
It is when it just feels like he's going through the motions to make a girl suffer
>>135139814
The hell are you talking about? This manga being about her suffering since the beginning. Yeah, it's Urasawa's take about 70's shojo, and the only thing that matters is if he can do that well or not. And considering that we are talking about 70's manga, and that literally nobody nowaday makes this kind of "tragic" story, the "it doesn't feel very original" card is really stupid and out of place.

I don't feel any significant emotional attachment to the characters the way there is with 70s shoujo
Happy is basically Urasawa going through a checklist of all the cliches and trappings of that kind of story but without any of the intensity. His art in Happy does not lend to creating any drama from the visuals, it's all good art but not really one that creates the atmosphere of the classics he's emulating. It's all the same, even the trick shot match with the coaches crying don't have any genuine passion behind it despite the text.
So yes, it's not original and that is bad because it can't create the same kind of reaction as the originals

Maybe it's because I haven't read a tremendous amount of 70s shoujo, but I thought it was fun.

There needs to be moments of respite where it looks like everything's daijobu in this kind of series instead of suffering nonstop
