Looks like someone responded for me, but I don't dislike Hacha either. I think what we talked about yesterday or the day before about GoPri kind of epitomizing all the Precure tropes was correct. Either you're tired of them all and want something different so you find GoPri boring, or you like all the things Precure does so you're still interested in the show. The theme of the season was romantic love. That doesn't mean they changed up the formula. Every season has a theme, and some of them actually focus on it in ways that make sense. Honestly that's one of the strongest points about HaCha, how it never forgot about the theme it was trying to present. But the overall formula for HaCha is the same MOTW shit that it's been ever since Futari Wa though. There are main heroines, side heroines that get less screentime, bad guys who are bad, bad guys who are endearing. You make it out to be some huge change to the precure formula, but it's still all the same shit, just in front of a different backdrop, one you happen to dislike. It seems disingenuous to me, like you're afraid to admit you just don't like a thing, so you just say the thing is inherently flawed instead.

To give a comparison, I don't mind games that have a foreshadowing but also kind of bait-and-switch final boss. Things like Persona 3, Bayonetta, or Sonic Adventure 2. You fight what appears to be the big bad, but there's some sense that it isn't quite over. That's similar to the end of Hacha. The Mirage fight was built up to most of the series because she was the baddie in front, giving orders to the generals, and commanding Phantom. Megumi had a climactic fight with her over Blue, bringing the themes of romance and illusions to the forefront with Blue almost literally on a cross as a symbol of it all. But if it ended there, then it would've only been bittersweet, and left open the thread of why Mirage was evil in the first place. Red, thankfully, was integrated into the plot from the very start, so his appearance wasn't just some random twist (compare with Gohyaan and SS, unless I'm forgetting something). The last episodes gave explicit confirmation that Blue was wrong, and brought to a head Megumi and Seiji's relationship. Just composition-wise, the outline they had for the development of their relationship from start to end was very well done and hit a ton of stages.

So I still really like Haruka. I really do.
They obviously didn't intend for her to be ugly but I do think they want her to be plain and simple and dull-normal in a way that would be relatable to girls (as opposed to the あこがれ-style of pinks like Hibiki or Love) because it was important that her wanting to be a princess was utterly laughable. She'll never be as kind and graceful as Minamin, or as beautiful and stylish as Kirara,or as GO! as Towa,but becoming a princess one day almost entirely through hard work sends a powerful message. Occasionally villains will mock people's dreams as they confine them, but no one gets ragged on the way Haruka does because her dream probably is the most ridiculous of all, even more so as she gets older. By comparison, Minami and Kirara's dreams are both mature and attainable, and they already live and work very nearly in the grown-up world.
There's something profoundly gendered about it all, too. I'm not sure how many of you grew up wanting to be a pretty princess, but I think to those who did, this series can hit a chord the same way HC did for the shy and socially awkward. I'm not sure whether anyone grows up wanting to be a prince (besides maybe Utena) but there's a special place in mockery for this particular dream even though there are equally fantastic other ones, like becoming a superhero. Through the front half of the season, she was mortified at having to admit it to people and they've gone out of their way to show how much she's taken her lumps because of it. But then maybe that's why it's so important that she defies it all.

One not very subtle but well done aspect of the Kirara and Minami arcs just now was really putting forth the Tsuyoku, Yasashiku, Utsukushiku part. Kirara's was a bit less so with her only being called beautiful a few times, but they hammered it home with Onii-sama and Minami's parents really saying how kind and gentle she is. In that last scene with her parents being proud of how kind she is not to want to disappoint them they really struck it. What I want to do now is go back to check Towa's episode again. It's possible that they didn't mention any of the traits which would leave strength to Haruka, but if they made Towa strong then that tells that Haruka will be all three by the end.
