Nah, this is what happens in the WN. Spoilers for the epilogue chapter in the next post.During the final battle with the Demon King, Kazuma uses Megumin's copied explosion magic knowing full well that he would die if he uses it. The resulting explosion is enough to destroy the two of them.
Dead, Kazuma meets up with Eris and Aqua who are both acting strange.
Aqua breaks down crying when Kazuma asks what happened to the Demon King and his army.
It's revealed that Kazuma really did die when he took out the Demon King. Aqua was unable to revive him since his body became unrecoverable in the explosion.
Aqua cries some more as Eris explains the situation. In the end, that last attack really did destroy the Demon King. Kazuma's friends however still don't know about his death. Darkness and Megumin are still waiting for his return.
Kazuma is understandably upset. In the end, he was unable to properly say good bye to the people he cared about.
Eris interrupts Kazuma's introspection by telling him that there is still the matter of his reward for killing the Demon King.
Aqua cheers up when it's revealed that Kazuma can return to the world that he grew to love. Before he could go back to his friends however, Kazuma is forced to choose another cheat item. In the end, he chooses the goddess Eris instead of Aqua.
Kazuma and Eris return to the battlefield where Darkness, Megumin, and Yunyun are all surprised at seeing Kazuma again. Somehow, Aqua finds a way to return to Kazuma's side.
Deciding to move to a better location, Yunyun is given the task of teleporting everyone to safety. In the end, Kazuma and Aqua are left alone as they wait for their turn. It's here that Aqua tries her best to confess her gratitude towards Kazuma. In the end, she manages to thank Kazuma for all the things he did for her. It`s here that Aqua manages to finally make Kazuma`s heart beat faster.

Megumin and Yunyun are both still doing daily trips to the Demon King's castle in order to use explosion magic on it. There is some meaning here since this action references a promise Megumin made to Kazuma.
In regards to Darkness, she is stuck dealing with marriage proposals that came after it was revealed that she was on the team that defeated the Demon King. It`s heavily implied that Darkness is still aiming for Kazuma and that Eris considers her a tough rival.
As for Aqua, she`s keeping an eye on the house while everyone is gone. The reason why Kazuma is hanging out with Eris is because Aqua kicked him out of the house due to a rude comment he made. It's worth noting that Kazuma managed to create a teleport point in the afterlife office that both Eris and Aqua use as their work-space. If Kazuma was unable to meet up with Aqua due to the fact that he choose Eris, he would be able to visit her at any time just by teleporting to her office.
The series ends with Eris giving Kazuma one last reward for saving the world. That last reward is a heartfelt "blessing" towards the one man who protected this wonderful world.
So, in the end, the series ends on an open note.

Well Kazuma was right. Mitsurugi was trying to take Kazuma's cheat and he challenged Kazuma to a duel, despite the level difference. Plus Kazuma couldn't actually use the weapon, so the next best thing to do is sell it honestly.

Well for whatever reason DEEN shows always attract a reasonably sized audience despite their quality. So it'll probably be a decent boost in popularity, though I think the LN sales are pretty good already since the series got a spin-off series.
