The Stand didn't manifest by itself as a punchghost, like most others, but via an actual, physical vessel, in this case a normal ship.

The ship was real. Strength didn't create a ship from nothing, it transformed a pre-existing ship into a bigger ship. People can't see stands but they can see real things being effected by stands.
