I still have no clue what "killing intent" really is, and why characters are supposed to be able to feel it like some sort of aura. Is it related to that "someone talked about me, I must now sneeze" thing?

Even weirder is the stories where it takes a central role, like that Freesia manga, where controlling this aura and choosing NOT to expose it is a skill. Then you have stuff like Overlord where strong fighters can pretty much scare lesser fighters TO DEATH with their killing intent.
>>
>>134973412

Its the Fight or Flight switch in your brain or mainly adrelinian that you feel from being around a tense or stressful environment. Overtime you can train this feeling into something helpful. Women's Intuition need not apply.

It's the feeling danger, go walk around a bad neighborhood and you'll feel it.
Characters who project killing intent are mobile bad neighborhoods
>>
>>134973719
Right, but people can apparently show killing intent without even moving, saying anything or changing their facial expression. Your opponent can be hiding and behind 3 walls, and you can still somehow "sense" his killing intent all the same. It's fucking weird.

>>134973807
Right, but that's what YOU feel about the situation, not what other people can "express". I mean, if some meek nerd from the internet was out there in the ghetto, he'd feel what you're describing as "killing intent" everywhere, yet another person would just go about his business. It makes no sense.
>>
>>134973886
Right, so it's more like "this guy is bad news, I better watch my step around this dude".

Still makes no sense how you can sense it without even being aware that anyone's there though. This is common in anime and manga, where savvy characters will anticipate an ambush out of the blue because they "sensed killing intent" in the air.
>>
>>134973897
Killing intent works both ways, in order for it to be anything it first must be shown or used and the other thing it must be felt by someone. In short hiding your killing intent until you kill someone is a thing. Same as feeling some one's killing intent for a short moment but brushing it off since it wasnt big enough to make you take it seriously. Perception is everything.
>>
>>134974043
>it first must be shown or used
Yeah, but what I don't get is what "it" is. Is it some sort of spooky nippon-magic that ancient samurai warriors used to scare their opponents, or is it just an abstraction of people shitting a brick when they meet someone they think are powerful? The latter doesn't really make sense when you can anticipate ambushes with it, so I'm just going to have to assume that it's somewhat supernatural in origin.
>>
>>134973088
It's called Saitama.

>>134973897
>Right, but people can apparently show killing intent without even moving, saying anything or changing their facial expression. Your opponent can be hiding and behind 3 walls, and you can still somehow "sense" his killing intent all the same. It's fucking weird.

Think about it like this, if you're a gangster and someone you're in the room with wants you dead, there's a good chance you can tell because you've been in that situation several times before. You know how you can sorta tell something is going to go badly based on experience? it's like that.

You're a little kid and you were a fuckwit at school so the teacher said they're calling home
You go home and mommy and daddy are the same as always when the phone rings. Even you, a little kid, can feel a change in the atmosphere after they get that call

It's common for people to say they could tell something isn't right when in contact with a loved one who would shortly be killed or go missing afterwards. Something is not right and they understand it. Just change it up a bit for fiction. The feeling of killing intent, in manga, is knowing that something is not right instinctively and being able to sense the immediate danger, the unnatural. To go back to the bad neighborhood thing, some people in those areas remain safe among the danger because they develop a sort of sixth sense to anticipate something wrong
>>
>>134972658
I've only watched YBJ, is the original series good too?
>>
>>134974450
Yeah, sure. If it's based on YOU interpreting the situation, but killing intent is clearly the other guy exuding some sort of aura, because it can be controlled by them. Like, someone is really "good" at showing killing intent, regardless of the perception of the viewer.

I suppose it might be a bit like the older definition of charisma, where it's more like a "personal power" that's somewhat mystical in origin, instead of anything strictly scientific. Makes sense with what the shinto belief in "kami" spirits of various sorts, etc.

>>134974463
Yes yes, but the salient issue here is that some people are apparently able to control it at will. If I knew you were a badass gangster, and I met you, I would IMMEDIATELY be a bit scared, but in an anime, you could just turn that shit off for the moment, only turning it on (with no outward signs of it changing) to make me suddenly shit my pants.

But like I said above, perhaps it's more of a japanese folklore thing. I understand the basic concept in there in other cultures, but not to the extent of Japan.
>>
>>134972658
>>134974463
There's a difference between noticing someone is off somehow but not knowing exactly what it is, and standing in a street and feeling someone's murderous rage from inside a house you walk by.
>>
>>134974755
People have auras and ways that the present themselves to the world around them. The killing intent of an individual is that externalized to the extreme. A badass gangster trying to genuinely bum a smoke from you isn't going to act the same way towards you as someone he's trying to shake down the same way you don't act the same towards your mom the way you do your buddies. It basically IS like flipping a switch
>>

Because my killing intent is stronger than other people's and most people would get destroyed by me in a confrontation.

People burst into pools of blood from my excessive edge.
>>
>>134975066
>People have auras
That depends on what you mean by that. Do you actually believe there are mystical energies floating about in the "ether" around people? Or is this merely a turn of phrase to describe how you feel when you're around a person?

>>134975235
Yes, and that's fine. I'm just wondering what it's meant to be.

I don't see any super saiyan auras from mma fighters, so it's clearly the latter. The way you look, the way you dress, your vocabulary, your intonation, the way you move, the way you smell, the way other people act around you, they all create an aura. If you had no idea what boxing was and thus no idea of its history, if you met Mike Tyson in his prime, you'd still likely feel his aura as a champion from his presence. You don't know what he does, but there's something about the combination of everything around him that says he's a champ

>>134975421
That makes sense. When you're stressed, your senses get duller so you can't feel others as well and can't perceive the danger in front of you
>>
I actually can sense the killing intent.
I've even stopped leaving my house at some point because of this ability.

>The way you look, the way you dress, your vocabulary, your intonation, the way you move, the way you smell, the way other people act around you, they all create an aura
None of which are able to be picked up through walls and out of sight, so doesn't at all explain how characters can anticipate ambushes out of the blue.

>>134975421
>martial arts
That sounds kinda like some DBZ bullshit to be honest. You can sense people subtly, that's true, through stuff like smell or hearing without even being complete conscious of it but getting a "gut feeling". But it's clearly not some kind of magical aura going on.
>>
There's been studies on this type of thing, it's really weird.
There's this one british guy who did several studies and claimed his child could always detect when he was looking at him. Also there was another study where they found arousal from porn before the porn was even clicked.

So the point is, yeah you're not going to make people faint by staring at them really hard. But there's clearly something there that we just don't understand, whether its just instinct being right after trigger thousands of false alarms or some sort of clue to the nature of conscious that we don't understand.
I suggest looking up the theory on 'morphogenetic fields' which basically claims that genes don't entirely define a lifeform so there are other factors involved.
It really woo woo territory but then again so is reality.
>>
>>134976002
>doubting the aura
No, it's not a "magical" aura, but it IS one of those things where where you'd have to experience it to understand it. High level fighters do get a sort of sixth sense, though nothing like precognition or what, it's just instincts: the mind subconsciously collecting data and giving feedback in the way of "feeling" something is there. You may not actively analyze everything you see or here, but that data is being transmitted to your brain.

Think about how you know which direction a ball is going to bounce if you throw it at a wall. Now tell me how you know that without calculating the return trajectory using physics. You can say "common sense", but your brain does basic physics all the time without you knowing, and no it's not doing actual equations, but it is collecting that information and giving it back to you without you having to think about it.

Many of these likely occurred while out hunting. The hunter sets down his rifle, and the dog, being a dog, thinks: "I will bring Master his Loud Stick!"

That, and from what I understand a large portion of Americans store their weapons improperly out of some kind of contempt for the mere IDEA that someone, somewhere, wants to restrict their right to bare arms.

It's a thing highly exxaggerated in anime and manga, to a sixth sense degree. Besides the 3 walls thing, there's people that feel the killing intent in little girls smiling and dancing with their eyes closed, and there's people that faint from feeling a strong killing intent. It's probably a Japanese belief, I haven't seen anything similar outside of manga/anime.

I sometimes see dogs who are normally friendly, but instantly get in guard when they see particular dogs. They won't stop staring at them, and will slowly go back and keep a distance, even if the other dog just decides to ignore it. Sometimes the other dog is even smaller or older.

I like to think that dogs can feel each other's killing intent. They must live in some kind of fighting manga world. Based on the attitudes of other dogs, I measure their powerlevels.

There does seem to be weird kind of sixth sense that you have to feel to believe, like the feeling of being watched or the feeling of danger, even if you've received no other signals from your other senses to indicate them.

Hatsumi explains it a bit in his martial arts books. (The dude with the purple hair in the background)

World-wide news; British soldier killed on British soil while not at war.
>>
>>134986657
That was newsworthy because of how flat out brazen and cruel it was, not to mention a massive example of bystander effect. Not like they could do anything against an angry man with a kitchen knife of course but still.
>>
>>134986732
>Immediately after the attack, several passers-by stood over Rigby's body to protect him from further injury. Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, a cub scout leader from Cornwall, disembarked from a passing bus with the intention of rendering first aid, after she saw what she thought was a road accident. On discovering that the victim was dead she engaged one of the assailants in conversation. The man said he was responsible for killing the man on the ground – a British soldier who the attacker claimed had "killed Muslims in Iraq and in Afghanistan". She asked one of the men to hand over his weapons, but he refused.

Doesn't sound much like bystander effect to me. The initial attack was carried out quickly by two people and a car, so bystander's wouldn't really have a chance to intervene before the attack.

>>
>>134987458
No, two people ran him over and immediately attacked him with blades, *attempting* to decapitate him.

There's not much ability for bystanders to respond to an attack like that that probably resulted in a fatality in like 30 seconds.

If it was one guy then a single bystander may be able to rush him and prevent it, but there's really no ability for bystander's to organize an effective response in under a minute.

Even if a bystander in the US had a gun he would need to be extremely close by and have a fast reaction time to effectively intervene.

Yes, brazen in that they weren't afraid of being confronted by police and were not trying to escape.

Even without a car, if two people immediately try and kill someone by surprise they're going to win 9 of 10 times. The only exception would be in a densely packed crowd (mosh pit level) where people can immediately restrain the attackers.

Two people with knives and intent could basically kill anyone without bodyguards walking down the street.

The United States is nearly 40 times larger than the United Kingdom. Texas alone is nearly 3 times larger. In terms of population, it's roughly 5 times larger.

Just to put things in perspective. I've never understood the rationale between trying to compare two such drastically different nations. It would be more accurate to compare the United States to a large enough section of Europe to actually be statistically comparable.

That's not the point. The point is that if two crazies decide they want to kill a single person on the street they can do it if they have resolve and a little bit of intelligence. Now they might get blown to bits immediately afterward but they still will succeed.

Well if they want to throw themselves into the meat grinder, more power to 'em.

That is also a good point. With the differences between regions and even between states, traveling to different parts of the United States can feel like crossing over into another country at times. That's why I said it would likely be more accurate to take a similarly-sized section of Europe and make comparisons, rather than taking a single European country and trying to compare it to the US as a whole.

It would take a very large bomb that the would would pretend to be shocked and in horror at the use of. Catch my drift?

Or perhaps an Islamic reformation and a Marshall Plan style program for war-torn ME countries.

Goddamn, I should run for president. This makes more sense than any candidate's platform on ME policy.

>reforming a goddamn religion over the span of a century, much less a decade
Fundamentalism is inherent to religion. You can't get rid of it without removing the religion. You have a book that literally tells you exactly how to live and everything in the book is the objective truth of the universe.

>I was saying small scale murders by crazies can't be completely prevented
That happens all the time here in the U.S. actually. Shootings like San Bernandino, Oregon college, and Sandy Hook happen in (believe it or not) gun free zones. People deter crazy spree killings in America a lot more often than you'd think so, stories like that never make it past local news so the rest of the world goes on thinking like America is some South American shithole where people get shot all the time without being able to do anything. The most dangerous cities in America are the ones with the the most gun control.

You gotta start at some point. Christianity was in the same boat and look how far it's gotten. Islam just never got the opportunity it did. They never had a Martin Luther which is sad because history has proven that the Middle East wasn't always a backward shithole as it is now.
>>
>>134989318
Christianity was at that point because Christianity got a strangehold on power. Islam currently has a strangehold on power. You have to weaken the religions to reform them, something that the religions obviously don't want.
>>
>>134989366
It starts from within. All it needs is some influential imam to question the bullshit doctrine and gather friends from high powers within it and then you go from there.

It's cheaper than a hydrogen bomb.
>>
>>134989451
It also takes longer and still leaves a religion that will inevitably have fundamentalists bringing up the old Jihads against the new, obviously satan inspired reformists.

Martin Luther caused a reform because he shattered the Church's power over a certain region in favor of his own religion. Protestantism is almost an entirely different religion to Catholicism. Suuni and Shiia aren't nearly different enough for that kind of weakening opposition.

>Protestantism is almost an entirely different religion to Catholicism.

Oh please. You guys still worship the bearded god and Jesus is still top dog in both books. The only obvious thing that's different between the two is that one recognizes the pope as an authority while the other doesn't.

Oh yeah the Middle East will be stable and inhabitable early 2300. After the wars die down, you see.

>you guys
I'm a pretty staunch atheist. But I know both catholicism and protestantism. Catholicism is basically a multitheistic religion that pretends to be monotheistic Protestantism is in the same boat but with a trinity of gods instead of a clusterfuck of angels of X guardians of y archangel Z the holy x y z and the big man in the sky at the CEO position of a religious middle management corporation.

That's what happens when you get a late start. Imagine flipping the tables and it's Christians still murdering everyone in their path.

Then I would condemn Christianity as I do Islam. Hell, I condemn them both anyways. Right alongside Scientology, whatever new crazy sect of christianity the american northwest is following today, and Judaism.

Yes, I don't deny religion kills, but you can find measures to mitigate it that's not nukes, drones or boots on the ground.

And none of those measures are in any way timely. I'm obviously just being edgy and facetious when I say to nuke them all, but the middle east is not exactly receptive to peaceful reform. No religious strongholds are.
