What's the fucking point?
>>
>>134961795
That's just a forced meme that's been spammed since the show aired. The perennial shitposters were looking for a target that season and settled on umaru, and now they just circle back to it whenever their OPM powerlevel thread 404's. Dedicated shitposters and offsite newfags are different sorts of cancer. You can discourage the latter, or at very least contain them by shitposting their favourite show into oblivion. There's really nothing to be done about the former. If you report their posts and they get banned, they just reset their phone and keep going day after day, season after season, year after year. We just end up needing to wait until they outgrow obsessively spamming garbage on the board and move on to /vg/ or some other chan.
>>
>>134960183
Which is amusing, since /a/ was created around when anime was still in a relative high of popularity.

That's actually accurate though

Just because we're so overpowered that we can survive by having all-volunteer armies doesn't mean that we wouldn't immediately go back to drafting teenagers if the situation got bad enough

North America, at least, hasn't drafted teenagers for 2 centuries. Drafts are always 18+ and those that get in underaged do so by lying about it in order to volunteer themselves. For the past couple centuries, the only armies that have been emplying child soldiers are the ones run by dictators and oppressive military regimes. I don't really see civilization regressing a couple hundred years all of a sudden because of some conflict or another.
>>
>>134962395
>For the past couple centuries, the only armies that have been emplying child soldiers are the ones run by dictators and oppressive military regimes
Demonstrably false
You know Great Britain turned a blind eye to 14 year olds serving in both wars, right?

If the enemy is knocking on your door you don't just suddenly give up when there's no more 18 year olds, it gets pushed to 17, then 16, and so on.

This happened, but it's very, very different from drafting children or systematically recruiting children as those there's nothing wrong with it. One is simply recruiters and the military being lax with its restrictions, the other is deliberately recruiting (or forcing recruitment upon) children.

Try finding a surplus of high-ranking officials with decades of experience. There's a reason generals are literally not allowed to fight in actual combat.

Well, you gotta sell toys. Around the time when Gundam was spawning, GI Joe was transitioning from generic military guys and adventuring Doc Savage-types to REAL AMERICAN HERO with ninjas and shit fighting Cobra.

Then again not much you can do about Japan wanting their teen MCs.

>>134966109
Nobody's asking for some colonel in their 40s to be piloting a mech, but even when officers were getting promoted at insane rates during WW2 they still were at least in their 20s and had a few years of experience with the military.

You'd want the guy using your giant multi-million dollar piece of equipment that can fly or at least level cities to be someone you can put in a position of authority.

The one Japanese cartoon where that cliche doesn't happen is this one. When one of the admirals on the Reich side volunteers to hold off the enemy so his Kaiser can escape from an ambush, there is no bullshit about the power of friendship or any such nonsense. Lutz stays and fights to the death, and Kaiser Reinhard honors his memory and posthumously promotes him to Fleet Admiral.
>>
>>134966471
yeah, somehow they do, and thsi is why most of this genre is total shit.
But the power of friendship tops everything.

It's a cultural thing honestly.
In WWII, when Japan had its back to the wall, they were pretty much out of experienced pilots.
So they would take the greenest motherfuckers they could find, fill their planes with enough fuel for one trip, and order them to aim for the bridge.
Suicidal teens behind the controls of the greatest technology of the time was an ACTUAL THING that ACTUALLY HAPPENED.
>>
>>134966644
I said this as how it pisses me off with the "tops everything".
>>
>war setting
>main character is bloodthirsty and doesn't accept surrender, gunning down bailed-out pilots in their parachutes
>ends with karmic retribution as the MC is thrown from his plane and gunned down by an enemy pilot due to the stereotype he helped perpetuate
Feels good man.
>>
>>134965059
Spaceships are silly, too.
What's even the point in having giant soft-shelled targets floating in space as 'combat' vehicles? What's the point in using pilots to operate strike craft (mecha-shaped or otherwise) when they could just be remote controlled droned instead? Hell, why involve human operators or extra functions at all when you could just have drone carriers deploy drone weapons platforms to launch fire&forget ordinance before being recalled and moving on?

Missiles in space don't have the same limitations as terrestrial ones. Most combat should, theoretically, be happening thousands of kilometers apart as drones launch guided, rocket-propelled warheads at radar blips. The tech to actually build and operate space ships implies so many other technologies that it's rather absurd for space warfare to play out like it's WW1/2 naval combat.
>>
>>134967176
Well, let's be fair, there's a point where realistic tactics for the level of technology have to go out the door because WW2 naval combat looks better in any visual medium.

Ships within fuck you distance, planes taking off from carriers to bomb shit and dog fight all around the battle field, big naval formations.
>>
>>134967176

Except that's basically what it's like right now.
Some of them are together for different reasons and there's certainly no real balance of power between them (eg. NATO vs OPEC vs.whatever that Brazilian union was supposed to be), but they exist. Lines of political power in the world are drawn by major military and economic alliances and most all of them involve some kind of collective reduction of sovereignty in exchange for close interrelationship.

Are you talking about the American soldiers, or the Japanese population in-story?

Remember that a constant part of the show were protesters. The first episode opened with a protest, and the last episode involved a protest and what was presumably a communist militia.

The relationship between the Japan and the US has always been kind of tenuous, especially during Vietnam when there was worry it might escalate and Japan would get dragged into a third world war with the communists.
>>
>>134959739

Happens IRL.

It's against human nature to kill other humans. People get out there and find that they just can't pull the trigger when they're looking a man in the face. Something cooked up by our complex human minds needs to override that instinct, whether it's training, anger, indoctrination into a belief that the enemy is less than human, desperateness, detachment, etc.

Even when they do pull the trigger, some people get traumatized by the memory.

Imagine if there was a 30-something major in an air force, or maybe a naval commander, or whatever branch of the military would get involved with giant robots and he(or she) is told he's gotta train a bunch of teenage girls to pilot giant robots to stop an insurrection or an alien invasion or other problems that giant robots solve.

It wouldn't be a shitty harem or anything like that, just an adult driven to wits' end trying to get untrained teenage girls of varying personalities, none of them suited for the military much less a warzone, to operate complex machinery.

It'd be like Heartbreak Ridge but funnier and with giant robots.

Not fun to watch.

This is why you're not making bank as a writer now

Germany didn't start recruiting elderly and teenagers until the real soldiers were all dead.

Nobody in his right mind recruits teenagers because they're simply not good soldiers.

And most anime featuring teenage protagonists in that sort of setting are ironically pretty spot on, since they're usually about borderline gay romance fujoshit and other types of drama, 2cool4school edgelords, and faggots who start to freak out and cry when things aren't going their way.

>Not fun to watch.
Nobody has ever tried it. Being afraid of trying new things is why you're not making bank as a writer, either. If you just blindly stick to old formula (which is exactly what happens, they copy the formula off of some old classic movies and novels and shoehorn it into the setting because it's a safe bet), then it's easy to find somebody that'll do it better than you or do it for cheaper.

Good writers learn from their predecessors and use that knowledge to create new things, or at least new takes on old things. Anybody can regurgitate, which means some mexican with a typewriter and quick fingers can regurgitate for less than what you'll work for. What every cheap mexican and 'comedy writer' with a college degree can't do is create, and that's where you find a career.

>they just can't pull the trigger when they're looking a man in the face

Most engagements are fought at quite some distances, even for the average infantryman.
And for people who are even farther away tearing people with rapid firing autocannons it's even more of a non-issue. If you listened to a couple of gunship radio chatter you'd come across gunners cracking jokes while they're non-nonchalantly cutting down tens of guys in a matter of seconds.

They were magic bows, though.

My big problem with that scene is that those helicopters should have smoked the archers long before they got into the range of their bows. Or hell, even if we assume that their bows had greater range than what was demonstrated and their scope feature gives them sight on par with a helicopter, one of the reasons why we don't use bows on the battlefield anymore is because-

Bow and arrow: 1 shot every five seconds if you're very fast
Weapons that you might find in use on an attack helicopter: 600+ RPM on the low side for things that put holes in you, several shots per second for things that blow you up or set you on fire on a larger scale

With five helicopters shooting at their neat little line of soldiers, they would have been a pile of guts before they could even get close to getting a shot off. Or a pile of ashes. Or crushed when the wall collapses. Or just otherwise dead.

That actually work when they pull it off though. Lots of boys were signing up for military in the past thinking it was glorious and shit, then they realized how shitty is it.

People call Americans nationalist, but the Japanese make even the most retarded uneducated flag-waving hick look like someone who hates his country. The former might excuse events using statements like "Dead children? They were going to grow up to be terrorists anyways!" or "Using Japanese skulls as ash trays? That'll show those subhuman jap monkeys not to mess with the USA!", but at least he acknowledges that Americans aren't above brutality. The Japanese outright refuse to acknowledge any events that don't paint the Japanese as innocent and blameless.

More like it's just not really productive or interesting to do so. There aren't many people left in the world that were alive at the time of the nukes, and the impact it had on their country, politically and culturally is far more important than projecting some 'sins of the father' guilt onto them for some things a previous generation did.

Acknowledging that your predecessors did something awful and glorifying it is not a good thing. It's not a good thing that americans treat the bad things they did like they were somehow actually good. That's not acknowledging brutality, it's glorifying it. Deliberately avoiding a subject means, at least, that you acknowledge how awful it was and understand that it's literally indefensible rather than offer pathetic excuses like "b-but they had it coming!" And, refusing to be held accountable for things the political body you live within did in the past is perfectly reasonable. This whole idea that an entire peoples should be held accountable in perpetuity for the actions of a few in the past is archaic. Heinrich the 6 year old in Germany doesn't need to apologize for the Nazis any more than Suzuki Miyamotorolazaki-san the sararyman needs to apologize for Nanking or John Smithsonbergstein needs to apologize for slavery. Holding an entire race accountable for their history is absurd -only niggers, koreans and the deep south do it unironically anymore.

It is not unreasonable to dislike something because of the people that like it. If I liked some video and then I go and look at the comments for it and see some of the stupidest, most annoying group of people, I'd question myself a bit.

personally I do not know which is more retarded the fact that the army would resort to bows(shot by lined up bowmen) or that the said tactic worked; I like you am more inclined to the latter being more retarded simply because the AH64s have a firing range which is far greater than the one depicted.

It's obvious that the demon army has extremely limited access to high tech weaponry. I doubt that they have even a single SAM launcher in their arsenal, unless you want to count some cheap as fuck RPG-7 or some shit.

It's the way that they used what they had that was really stupid. They should have spread out and hid. Sure, the helicopters still would have raped them, but at least the possibility of survivors who could strike back would have raised a bit.
>>
>>134976713
this is why I said the latter is more retarded. I see how such a quandary is becometh upon them, though I doubt the authenticity of said quandary given the amount of technological resources they have acquired. I mean the demon army has some choppers too for example.

Well yeah. That's why a lot of the early gundam MCs were fine fucking up other mobile suits and killing the pilot inside, but were really bad initially at shooting directly at live people.

Many of their soldiers march everywhere on foot. Forget tanks and helicopters, they have to ration out their use of trucks and humvees. It's pretty obvious that they're under-equipped.

If they have helicopters (can't say I remember those), they probably have a minuscule amount and want to keep them out of harm's way for use in battles battles that are deemed extremely decisive.
