Hahahaha.

You need a good understanding of proportions, perspective and lineweight. Once you understand these subjects it's really not that hard to make pieces like in the right, it just takes a bit more time than simply going for anime stylized drawings.

The problem with some anime/manga (doijinshi especially) is when the artist *doesn't* grasp human anatomy, and therefore they end up making people who are so anatomically unrealistic, that it actually gets a little disturbing on occasion.

Basically this. Talent at drawing only means you have some of the traits most people have to develop over months if not years of practice: steady hands, an eye for shape and form, or good hand-eye coordination, or maybe good instinct for color coordination. These are definitely advantages that allow you to rapidly progress, but you still don't get anywhere without putting them to practice.

I don't think so. I thought that's what nice hips look like, usually. Then again I don't have an eye for form and I struggle to draw passable stick figures, so I guess I'm not exactly an authority on the subject.

>>134922546
>They say ten thousand hours is needed to become an expert in anything.
Fair enough, but this basically equates to around 3 to 5 years of practice, right? If I'm at least passable after one year I guess that can keep me going.

I'll just go ahead and daydream about being a good artist and think of the things I'd like to draw. I'm an expert at that, at least.
>>
>>134922104
Not as far off the mark as you'd believe. Environment and genetics both play a role in determining intelligence. So you can be innately skilled at art but so long as you don't train that reflex, you'll always be subpar to someone who actively practices.

Reading books on anatomy, trying to reproduce, failing, reading again trying again, then trying to draw an anime girl with what you just learned. Sketching, constructing, trying to memorize major body volumes and minor such as muscules and fat, trying to draw complex poses with foreshortening and perspective, also learning values, colors, and sketching robots and mechs to feel perspective of simple shapes more.

And lots and lots of actual books an anatomy and drawing.

- Lineweight too heavy. Don't draw the lines and draw over them as if your life depended on them.

- Why is the shading directional? Pick one direction and stay with it. Don't shade up and down the limbs following their exact orientations.

- Proportions are poor. Head is too big, torso too small, arms are spindly and it looks like you tried to emphasis the butt way too much.

- Butts are not solid round balls. They can and will be squished by the thighs in different poses.

- Did you copy the hands from somewhere?

- Overall it's very stiff and forced-looking.

It's shit.

You copied existing art. There's no louder sign than pen/pencil sketches consisting of broken lines scratched together with no proportion guidelines in sight.

Go doodle some moe girls in different poses without more than glancing at some reference art and get a feel for having lines come from your hands in natural, long strokes.

I have no time to extensively practice art anymore nowadays, unfortunately. I used to be able to fill up a 100-sheet sketchpad in 1 year, but now between work and household obligations, the measly free time I get is further splintered by other hobbies and chores. I'm lucky to fill a 50-sheet sketchpad in 3 years now.

This shit is too hard. How is it even possible to learn all those things. You got books with thousands of pages just about anatomy and you need to know how to draw million other things if you want to be good.
>>
>>134921786
So where's your drawings, faggot?
>>
>>134925239
Is that a copy of some Kantoku?
>>
There is alot of different things to learn in drawing. There is technique which is physically learning how to draw and make it come out the way you intend, there is anatomy and life drawing to understand what things really look like so you can draw them realistically without a reference, and there is theory and composition to understand how you set up a shot changes our perception and emotional response to the shot.

There is also art history so you can understand the context and characteristics of different styles. There is also practical experience which leads to speed and consistency in work.

Depends on your mindset, I think. Anyone can git gud, that's the great part, but how long that takes is up to the individual. The more you stress the amount to learn and the time it'll take, the more daunting it seems, but if you train cyclically I don't think it's too bad..

With practice your lines can get less sketchy and you'll be able to create the line you want in a single smooth stroke. Its just part of developing your technique.

600% the truth.
People say that you gotta learn how to draw before you can learn how to un-draw; there's no sense in parroting shit like "muh stylization" or "muh exaggeration" if you have no clue how these objects's you're stylizing and exaggerating look like naturally.
Even hackjob psychos like Picasso or Botero studied anatomy extensively before they purposefuly fucked it up in their paintings. Not to mention painting techniques, use of color and light to make volume, etc.

I mean, check this simple Wokada pic I lifted off a booru. Wokada has a very simple, clean style and a very light use of color, but his use of it, plus previous knowledge of the human figure let him do whatever the fuck he wants and make it look nice.

Most all people that jump the gun on the hard work and start straight into drawing "animu style" tend to draw in symbols rather than making volume through shapes. You're not implying a nose, you're making a dot and calling it quits; those aren't titties, those are two half-circles you drew. They don't have an idea on how to make a body and then stylize it into a drawing, they're just chicken-scratching their way into flat, dull shapes in flat, dull poses

yes and no. the reason you should learn realism is because you can than abstract it yourself as you know what's there, its part of making your style.

with manga, or visual novels, its painfully obvious which ones know how to draw realism and which ones only know anime because of how bad the ones who dont look. there area lot of concepts that go into making a traditional figure good, that also translate to making a manga style character good too.

do you need that level of proficiency to draw manga or anime good, fuck no. but the concepts to make your characters look better are easier to learn traditionally than it is through manga style.

if you can do lines traditionally and got something to scan or take a good picture with, in photoshop, go to filters and dick around with palet knife tool, that will make traditional lines into fairly clean digital ones and will get you by so long as you are not a perfectionist.
>>
>>134922171
those aren't artists, most of the older non conceptual artists could do some amount of realism that would be good, probably on par with op image but not as clean, but somewhere in the early 1900's academic art got taken over by people paying big money and not wanting to put the work in to become artists, they dont want to put the work in, they dont want to get better, they want to throw shit at a wall and see what sticks.

if i remember right, russia never had this issue, so you see a great deal of proficient artists come from there while in the west you see mostly conceptual bullshit, mind you im not talking concept art for games or movies, i mean the "i farted out a paint filled egg from my cunt and it fell on a piece of paper... art!" people.
>>
>>134922246
so does for shortening, perspective, and how to abstract, than there is also color theory... so much shit you learn traditionally helps immensely.

its not weabshits, its the "mah style" as you can critique a realism piece, but the moment you make anything abstracted, its now an argument if you abstracted it good, or at all and its not just you suck.

fact is we cant help you if you can defend everything you draw with "its mah stile" so usually unless you already have a base to work off of, working in a style is discouraged.

learning a language is a motherfucker till you get over the hurdle of basic conversation, than you can add to you knowledge base through context.

take a look at a game like rocksmith, that gives you the instant gratification of a game, a measureable "im this good now" gauge, and you dont spend years dicking around with not songs... if everything was like this, you wouldnt need school because people would want to learn on their own.

with anatomy, you only need to know the major forms, and know where the minor forms should be, if you know that (easily remembered knowledge) than you will go far, only suffering when you do realism at a masters level.

what you need to know for anatomy is really a lot less than books make it out to be. sure, at some point you will want to know all the names and insertions, but to draw them, you dont need to know any of that shit, just know what you see on the surface.

alot of art is like this, the books tell you a masters level of knowledge but to draw them you need far less than that.

problem is, with an instrument most people can tell something is wrong by sound, but art, you usually need to look at shit in a mirror to see you fucked up, especially when you are new, our mind has a way of tricking us into thinking something isn't as fucked up as it looks.

Its interesting you say that, humans can tell when something is off naturally when they look at another human. This is why we can have the uncanny effect. With basic understanding of human anatomy creation, foreshortening and shapes, any newbie can produce figures that look ok. If you keep working on them, they will come together better each time. With instruments its just different in that sense of wrong, you don't make it sound wrong but you might be playing it wrong, tempo and etc.. but regardless I understand, every artist has their problems that they developed and can't see.
