If you think it got an award for good writing you're mistaken. It's just the first of its kind to address shit like deafness and people with disabilities being bullied in a somewhat realistic sense. It also helps that the Japanese Association of the Deaf pretty much sponsored that manga which is what it got it the award and attention.
