It's really cheap to make beta MCs in an attempt to make them relatable to the losers who read/watch the franchises. But what seems forgotten is that the same loser readers want to see the character grow, as opposed to the manga authors saying it's ok to be a submissive bitch.
In Gantz, for example, I expected Kurono to permanently change into the badass he was on Mission 3, not go full emasculated and cry for a subpar girl. I always had a strong impression the author changed ideas (as he did many times on this particular franchise) and decided on a whim to make Tai a significant character. At first she was supposed to be a random girl Kurono brought to his room and fucked "because he wanted too", in his words. She was even drawn as an unimportant character, according to Hiroya Oku's style.
