So what's /a/'s opinion on Trigun? I've never seen it discussed on here.
>>
The animu was one of my gateway shows. Sometimes my song library shuffles to Sound Life and I'm hit with this wave of nostalgia.

I really liked the manga as well (I have Trigun + the first five volumes of Maximum on my shelf) but the paneling in action scenes is fucking awful. I remember Vash vs Midvalley the Hornfreak being impossible to follow.
>>
There's was some new movie IIRC which I didn't see. Series was awesome, 8/10.
Too bad most of /a/ don't watch anything made before 2010.
>>

I should really get down to watch the movie sometime. I heard it's real good.
>>
Good show, it starts out a little formulatic but once the main story kicks in it becomes awesome, and while the ending isn't anything surprising the final battle is just beautifully animated.

Did you guys think the ending with Knives in the anime was a letdown compared to the ending in the manga? I liked the idea of Knives pretty much ending than him just getting beat up.
>>
>>134841747
It's not really that good, they basically just remade episode 5 of the show where the whole town is after him and stretched it out over a movie.
>>
I'm mad Vash and Meryl never kissed
>>
>>134841893

But at least Milly and Wolfwood fucked.
>>
>>134841928
Yeah, but Wolfwood is fucking dead.

At least Vash's feelings for Meryl were obvious in the manga.

It gets short-lived threads once almost every week actually. But yeah, most of the time I see people think it's good, with the only real issue being that the animation tends to dip a couple of times in the series. It's mostly the story and Vash's characterization that carries the entire show.
>>
>>134841546
The manga had some awesome fight scenes near the end
>>
>>134842016
I liked how Wolfwood died. I didn't want him to die but I think they did a good job with it.
>>
>>134841546
>I've never seen it discussed on here.
Probably because it's like 17 years old? What is there to discuss?
>>
>>134841782
Honestly? I don't mind either endings for Knives (I have differing opinions of the rest of the manga though which tends to be a clusterfuck of cool ideas poorly executed). I always thought that Knives and Vash's conflict in the anime was done in such a way that it was an overblown quarrel between two siblings, so Vash outright beating him and STILL allowing him to survive felt really appropriate and serves to disprove Knives's point about what it means to survive. The anime implied rehabilitation for Knives and given how he was willing to sacrifice himself in the manga I don't really see it being too far-fetched. Hell they could make an entire movie out of that with Vash/Knives story set post-series while taking cues from the manga.
>>
>>134842183
Irrelevant since /a/ likes to circlejerk over Eva all the time even tough its 20 yeras old
>>
>>134842016
But the anime practically gave more screentime between Vash and Meryl's romance to the point that the 2nd last episode was practically guaranteeing that their ship would sail (with Meryl even exclaiming how Vash shouldn't keep a good woman waiting after his encounter with Knives). Personally I didn't mind it that way, it served to heighten the extent of their relationship without needing to be overly romantic about it.
>>
it was great
the manga was even better
>>
>>134842182
Yeah, very subtle though. It got me very confused. But nothing as subtle as the shagging with with Milly. My 12 years old mind couln't wrap over the fact they actually had sex

>>134842299
Heh I don't know anon. I always got the impression that Meryl was way more into Vash than the other way around and he never really got over Rem.
Shit, I really should download this series it's been such a long time since I saw it. I remember little bits of it but I do know I used to draw lots of Meryl and Vash pictures when I was smaller.
Those were sweet times ;_;7
>>
>>134842205
That's a good opinion man. That's what I was thinking but I couldn't put it to words.
>>
>>134842424
> I always got the impression that Meryl was way more into Vash than the other way around She was, but Vash was very open towards her anyway.

>he never really got over Rem.
Actually this is rather untrue. What I really liked about the ending was that Vash learned to move past his idealization of Rem especially after his horrible experience in killing Legato. He basically learned that he should live by his own his experiences and declared that he would stop relying simply on Rem's guidance while still respecting her teachings. That was the whole point of him finally removing his red coat at the end, as a sign of his maturity.
>>
>>134842675
I goofed, my reply to the first quote was meant to be seen like so:

I was watching the English remastered version and I realized that the remaster fucked up the part in the episode "Diablo" when he spared Monev. Specifically, the vocal track didn't play at all at the end, so all you hear is the instrumentals which really screwed up the moment. I know this because I've actually seen the episode multiple times enough to recognize that the vocal track should have come on (hell I still have a copy of the older release to compare the two).

Extremely Overrated by Nostalgia. Especially Wolfgang fags, because he almost had no characterization before the episode he dies.

The grainy look of the anime lends to the western dusty setting it's trying to achieve. I doubt a modern remaking would even be able to catch the tone it would look too clean, same issue with the trigun movie.
Pretty decent show, the writing is excellent but the art suffers at times 7/10
>>
>>134842424
wait what. there were hints Wolfwood and Milly did the deed??! what were those?
>>
>>134843461
>The grainy look of the anime lends to the western dusty setting it's trying to achieve.
Yeah exactly this. Which is why it's a shame that it didn't get a better treatment in terms of animation, especially since the hand-drawn grainy look really did add to the visual experience.
>>

It's in the episode where he literally dies. It was implied to have happened when she stayed over at his place and you see him shirtless taking a smoke by the window side. Most people who watched it when they were younger didn't catch it since it was a pretty quick scene.
>>
>>134841546
The anime is great, especially for newcomers to anime. A lot more happens in the manga, which is cool, but in my opinion the anime does certain parts much better. One part in particular was done superbly in the anime, but just felt kinda meaningless in the manga.

The ending was clearly better in the manga though.
>>
>>134841546

I wish there was a straight up adaptation of the Maximum manga, while the anime was pretty good at getting the same story across I would've loved to have seen certain things that weren't included and they missed out a lot of Knive's facial expression from what I remember whenever he was pissed.

>>134841659

I just ordered the last Maximum omnibus yesterday, I agree though, Nightow can't draw action scenes for shit, everything else is fine though.
>>
>>134843639
It's a shame because, while I love the ending of the manga, I honestly preferred certain moments in the anime more (specifically, the entirety of Legato's character and especially his death).

It's no wonder why Archer looks reminiscent of Vash and Knives combined.

>>134843707
>especially his death
Yeah, that's the part I was referring to. Everything about it was more impressive and impactful in the anime than in the manga.

Though at least in the manga we get to see a BIT of Legato's background.
>>
I loved both, anime and manga.

>>
>>134843417
I guess you have to read it to find out what happens.
>>
>>134843896
I liked his background, and I'm glad that the anime at least made a nod out of it when he killed the group who owned the slaves. Still, I wasn't very fond of how Nightow turned him into a yandere over Knives. It could have been done on purpose since Trigun Maximum came out after the anime so maybe he just wanted to differentiate between the two versions since he doesn't mind adaptations being different to his work anyway. The anime definitely handled his death a lot better though.
>>
What's /a/'s opinion on Evangelion? I've never seen it discussed on here.
>>
>>134844095
Good but entirely overrated and artsy to the point of pretentiousnes.
Cowboy Bebop is also over rated, it's one major flaw is it's pacing which grinds the show to a halt at times, doesn't help that the show its episodic and presents little to no character development. I'd say it's reverse trigun, meh story and excellent animation.

This shit was my gateway anime. I was never the same after I finished it. I had to find more like it, but I was disappointed. That's okay, though. I found some things I liked as of late.

That being said, the manga was great and obviously had more time for depth and character count. Those action scenes were wacky, but there are some moments I'll never forget in Maximum ("Isabelle..."). Movie was lovely, too. Totally made me feel like this series could do well with a fresh coat of paint throughout. That, and the movie's version of H.T. was fucking perfect.
>>
>>134855749
Agreed, while the movie itself was average in that it told what is essentially an extended episode of the show, seeing it made with modern aesthetics while still feeling as good as it did kind of speaks volumes of its lasting appeal.

I do applaud the series for making a story that had a lot of heart, especially with what little source material it could draw from. Most people tend to forget that while Trigun was originally a manga, the anime was actually made at the time when the series got cancelled, meaning that it could only draw from the first half of Nightow's manga. It was only after the anime finished that Trigun Maximum even came to be and it's why it had all the time to delve deeper in some elements of the series (and to an extent, why the anime and the manga were so different in the first place).

Regarding pic-related, I really love the collaborative redesign of Monev The Gale by Nightow and Yamaguchi, which has a more cyborg killing machine vibe to it. It was essentially used as the basis for Kaiyodo's action figure of Monev. Kinda wish it was used somewhere (an OVA, an animated short, anything) because it just looked so cool even if it seems impractical when compared to his original design.

Secondly, Vash never went all out because he didn't want to kill anyone.
>>
>>134866681
>adaptation
While I'd argue the "crap" part, it had very little in the way to adapt in the first place given how they were going off of the incomplete manga (which at the time, would get cancelled anyway). Nightow basically just gave bare details which the anime would make a story out of. It was only after the anime had aired did the rest of the manga actually get finished.

It's meant to be symbolic of both with regards to how they're treated as resources.

With regards to plants as flora, Knives highlights how plants are essentially used and eaten by humans (say a fruit for example) because of their inability to move/defend themselves. With Knives and Vash essentially being super-powered humanoid "plants", Knives views himself as justified in killing humans due to the role-reversal where they are inherently superior to humans unlike normal plants.

The series essentially correlates power plants with humanity's use of flora as a collective resource, in which generalizes the concept for the sake of storytelling.

You didn't like how crayzeh he was in the manga compared to anime? Anime Legato does appear somewhat more formidable and wise. "Yandere" doesn't really sum up manga Legato's character. I think other than being super loyal to Knives, he needed that as a reason to keep going, and he also was seeing Vash as someone similar to himself. His death in the manga may be less impressive scene, but it gives a good touch to Legato's character, as we see that while he hates himself, he doesn't want Vash to take his determination lightly.

I don't think there ever was, at least a full version that was officially released anyway.

Not a slight against the manga version ot anything but yeah, I wasn't too keen on his overall personality. I guess it's just one of those things that I thought was too predictable, especially in how he wanted to usurp Vash in Knives's eyes.

What I liked about the anime's depiction was how he truly held a nihilistic outlook and how he really loathed himself and humanity as a whole. I also liked how he was more resigned to his fate as a temporary substitute for Vash's place with Knives and it made for a more tragic circumstance with regards to his self-loathing. I thought that it made his death more impacting because you know he's doing it out of some misguided belief that was derived from Knives himself.

I left it halfway through, the old series i mean

>I left it halfway through
But doing so meant that you basically missed out on the actual meat of the story!

Livio was a pretty cool dude in the end. Hard to top Wolfwood after he died but being a buff 9-foot Clint Eastwood looking guy helped a lot.

I liked it better when it was just kinda pointless wandering around. when the plot kicked it in got weird. still good, but weird

Dropped it after two or three episodes. It felt like a shitty sci fi version of Rurouni Kenshin.

I understand how some wouldn't like it, first episode is one of the worst pieces of anime I've seen and the first half takes a while for anything to get going but all the good stuff is in the second half.

Hardly. Vash's circumstance is very different from Kenshin. Kenshin's pacifism is treated as part of his character's self reflection whereas Vash's no-kill rule is brought on by his naive arrogance to being essentially a superior being so he ends up thinking that he can control any situation with his own desired outcome (the outcome being that no one should die). While Kenshin's pacifism is about his redemption from his bloody past, Vash's case relies on his ideals being slowly questioned, and broken down/dissected as the series moves along.
