Honestly Gunbuster is just average till episode 4. Then Episode 5 and 6 are the two best episodes ever made... ever.

Gunbuster is a work with spurts of beautiful animation and insipid characters and plot that references older fiction too much and too heavily for it to be emotional at any point when it's just the classics with a fresh layer of high quality paint
It's okay, I'm sure there are lots of currently airing, entirely unique and interesting shows like Rakudai no Asterisk more suited to your sophisticated tastes. No need to waste your time watching stuff that looks old
