I think its mentioned in the Benizakura arc that although hes insanely good, his years of laziness have made him lose some of his ability. I'm more curious how good Sougo is because hes meant to be the best sword in the Shinsengumi but Toshi beat him once and Gin rekt Toshi without really trying.

It's canon that he's out of practice. Benizakura Arc established that he gets stronger when he gets back into his rhythm.
However it conceivable that he got an age-based increase in strength in the meantime, which would mean that current Gin with young Gin's skill is the strongest Gin.

They seem to be going 3 chapters per episode, so it should end with 7 or 8 episodes. That's pretty long for a Gintama arc, but as far as the anime goes the Yoshiwara arc was just as big, since back then they animated 2 chapters per episode due to adding some extra scenes and extending the fighting a bit. I wish this story were getting that treatment. That wasn't really dragged, it was just making things a bit slower to give them more presence...
