Because it looks like just K-on in the army on the surface and is pretty subtle with what it's trying to do up until like episode 7. Its pretty easy to overlook and dismiss offhand. That's part of what makes it so good though.

Ah, no. Most shows are rather unique in that regard, but with SnW, the fact that it tries to tackle all of these at once is what ends up not making it as great for me, because it doesn't carry any one theme to its fullest, so it feels like it simply half-assed them all. It's too widespread.
It's a good show, comfy to watch this time of year, but it's nothing I would carry on a banner or as symbol on my back.
The score and particularly the ED are top notch though.
Its pretty good if you read deep into the untold history, I am still waiting for the translation of the VN.

Different people search for different things in a history, i found SoW pretty comfy i think it's time to rewatch it again for 4345th time.
Had it came out 1 or 2 years ago instead of when it did it would have been a smashing success. Most people didn't give it more thought that "K-ON with guns" and skipped it.
However, imagine had it aired during the period military otaku-stuff was at it's peak. It would have perhaps sold as much as Girls Und Panzer. This was also the same period cute girls doing cute things, a genre K-ON made mainstream, was also during it's peak.
It simple was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Which is a shame considering it's a really well done series with lots of love and thought put behind it.
I only wish for a second season in which the characters explore the world, something around the lines of Kino no Tabi.

I think it's too slow to attract the same kind of audience as GuP. GuP isn't cute girls doing cute things, it's a high-energy sports anime with tanks: a completely ridiculous premise played totally straight, and that's where the fun comes from, which is why it's an easier sell.
Besides, Sora no Woto would never have been made without the colossal failure that was Anime no Chikara. Being a commercial flop was like part of the deal.

Sora no Woto was directed by the guy who did the Elfen Lied anime, written by the guy who did Seikon no Qwaser and Guilty Crown and Vividred, and produced by A-1 Pictures who did the ending of Oreimo. It's one of the best slice of life series ever made.

I can't think of a single show that did atmosphere so perfectly and made the smallest moments stand out so much as Sora no Woto did. It's got cute girls, actual character devolpment, touching and well told backstories, a unique setting, a top tier soundtrack, and a great message about the power of an individual to make a difference in the world, and finding purpose for yourself in a hopeless environment. It excels so much in all these areas that any kind of criticism I could level at it just gets blown away by the excellence of all of its other elements.

Keep in mind, the first half of the first cour might feel underwhelming but after around 10 eps they ditch the old writer and put Tow on the job permanently and the first season really gets into the groove at around the 18 episode mark.
At least that's what they told me when I started, I didn't exactly feel underwhelmed at the start but I most certainly noticed the improvement later on.
Plus the current-running season has some of the best mecha fights in years.
