They lost motivation specifically because
a) It doesn't matter how strong they are, they can never fucking catch up. All Tien does is train, and is time is never rewarded
b) They were left behind by the plot from the get go. Most of the characters spend an entire arc DEAD ad at the end of it there's a bar of "Super Saiyan or you can not play". Seeing as the new characters that arrive have to be more powerful, or there will be no tension, it means several characters will be left behind.
A new Saiyan, Trunks was born in order to push on the story and add another Saiyan to the cast. Yamcha loses his girlfriend, as well as any status as a character at this point.
c) By the Buu Saga, the series goes out of it's way to retire several characters from fighting
d) Despite the many attempts at passing the buck to Gohan/Trunks/Goten, people are upset that Goku and Vegeta are being upstaged. These characters and their ambitions are abandoned.
