I was reviewing the history of Manga the other day.
Never realized how much great shit came out between 1980-1986.
Toriyama (Slump/DB)
Macross
Modern Gundam
Start of OVAs
Early (i.e. good) Ghibli
Daicon IV and start of Gainax
Hokuto no Ken
Jojo
etc
etc
etc

Anime and manga both still just running on the fumes of the early-mid 80s.

FACT

I know, these plebeians will never understand just how good the classics are compared to new trash. <_<

What a surprise. I guess that has to be because /a/'s all shit taste plebs and not because 90% of the board is under 35 or anything like that.

They're just older encodes by other groups. [EG]'s releases are by RX782, a tripfag over on /m/, that does the best quality encodes possible of some old blurays for archival purposes. Generally if you see he did a release for some old mecha or sci-fi show it's probably the best version.

There's 6 episodes, plus 7 science lesson shorts (two were added with the bluray release) and three short bonuses explaining some other side stuff. You don't really need to watch the science lessons or the specials but they're neat.

Cobra (directed by Dezaki, one of the greatest ones there were)
Queen Millennia (and there were sequels from Yamato, Harlock and Galaxy Express, although imo none as good as the originals from the 70s)
Ideon
Saint Seiya
But I'd say that everything started in the 70s already. Still, one of the most important thing about the 80s (that you mentioned already) is Macross, not only because of its success and its quality, but because it was the first tv series planned and done by otaku. In fact, most of its creators were teenagers in the 70s and grew into adulthood watching the early Tomino/Matsumoto/Go Nagai works, among others; those kids were the first otaku generation, a phenomena that happened when Yamato and Gundam aired. And Macross is clearly a descendant of those two anime.

Oh, I think the two different versions of episode 6 are just edited to be widescreen or not. The EG release isn't cropped, it's the original version of the episode. Never look at the BakaBT comments sections, they're pure cancer and full of retards that have no clue what they're talking about. The specials are just some bonus info about some of the mechs in the show.

That last Nyaa link is the Gunbuster vs Diebuster movie which chops up both OVAs to fit them into one movie. It's shit, just watch the OVAs.

>>134788501
What? It doesn't have much to do with Macross at all. It's a pretty fun Super Robot show, takes a little while to get going and the animation isn't anything to write home about but it is fun. Got canceled early but they got popular enough after getting canceled to show the actual ending in a pretty good OVA, and the second OVA is fantastic. There's a third OVA too but it's never been subbed, from what little moon I can understand it still seems good though.
>>
>>134788560
The specials are just chibi versions of the characters explaining some science behind the series, I think. It's not mandatory.
The episode 6 has 2 versions. One of them is cropped so it has 16/9 aspect ratio (like the Dragon Ball Z releases), the other one retains the original 4/3 aspect ratio. That's the one you want to watch (or at least the one I'd want to). EG apparently didn't release the 4/3 version, get it from another group (I have the QTS version).
>>
Cutey Honey is so under rated.
>>
>>134788600
Of course it is. But the manga is from 1968 and the first anime is from 1970. There's always been good anime. The thing is that in the early 80s and after the way Yamato and Gundam succeeded, the producers and investors in the industry were open to release more risky stuff, so the amount of non-formulaic, ground-breaking anime in that time was significant.
If they wanted to do serious stories in the 70s there were plenty of manga to chose from, there was the whole gekiga genre and some works from Tezuka that they started to animate many years after they were published.

I was born in 81 and I love 70s, 80s and 90s anime (second half of the 90s). I think that the 70s are quite underrated by anime fandom in general, there are many gems that defined whole genres.

>>
>>134789083
It depends. Watch the episode 27 and tell me if its animation isn't fucking awesome. When it was done by Studio Nue in Japan it looked gorgeous. When it was outsourced it looked like shit. Executives didn't care too much for it until the results of the first 3 episodes arrived and they saw how high the ratings were. Also, they constantly shifted the amount of chapters that they were going to do, in fact, after those 3 episodes they said "instead of 27 make it 36", so many things had to be changed at the very last minute.
>>
>>134789227
7 is great but it has its share of detractors. You kind of have to get into the mood for 7 because it's easily the silliest part of the franchise.

I hated Frontier. I don't know why so many people like it but it's a step down in many ways except for music. The protagonist is the worst, it's the only series that has a high school setting and the art doesn't look that great compared to Plus DYRL or even 7. There's parts that I like but overall I didn't enjoy it as much as the others.
