It's used by commanders and recon units because of an improved sensor mast.
Physical appearance in game it's differed by the antenna being moved to the front of the head unit and being a bit bigger.

In Muvluv, humanity on the planet Earth is fucked. Period full stop the end. The BETA are simply overwhelming. After half the planet got wrecked by g-bomb spam in a last desperate gambit to stop the BETA while colonist ships went off In a slim chance of finding a planet somewhere else where humanity can restart on. That only slowed down the BETA.
Literally the only chance the Earth had was to take out the Superior before it could adapt and close out every advantage (i.e., Rutherford field) humanity had. Also, it was getting pretty advanced in figuring out humans, which would have been basically game over right there. On top of that if the BETA got a little serious they had Creator super science that was magic to humans and would crush the earth effortlessly.
That's how FUCKED humanity was. And it was in that ultra fucked situation humans STILL managed to do retarded shit like plot coups and fight each other. That was some real tragedy.
