So out of curiosity what anime got you really hooked? it could be the first series you saw or something a friend recommended.

Not really, my memory is pretty blurry and I never went out of my way to find much obscure stuff. I'd have to rewatch things to see if they are any good today. Whatever I can recommend you can probably find in any recommended list that floats around the net. I can tell you one thing though, Macross a shit.

I think I decided to watch something for the hell of it. I can't remember what was the first I've watched, it was either the first FMA or Rozen Maiden. It wasn't really 'hooked' but to this day I mostly DL anime so I have something to watch while on a bus.

As a kid I always enjoyed anime whenever it aired on TV more than the cartoons that were airing.
DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh, Megaman NT Warrior, Naruto, One Piece and Sonic X are a handful of standout shows that aired on Toonami and Jetix.
Then I discovered the Internet and finished off shows that always looped on TV.

My brother caught me watching it in 2009, he calls me a "manga faggot" since then.
Oldfag here. Grew up with Voltron and Robotech but didn't realize it was anime until much later.
The was a small videostore in town run by an elderly chinese couple. We rarely rented movies there but they had a great selection of NES games. As I was picking up some random NES game, I noticed these big clamshell cases in the Kids section. They had Bubblegum Crisis, Akira, Gunbuster and Bakshi's Wizards
This was a few years before Manga Entertainment hit the market.
I had my mom rent me Gunbuster Vol. 1 and 2.
Digimon/Pokemon at 9-10.
Then because I grew up with Disney cartoons I pretended I hated their stupid big eyed art style and was a condescending little faggot.
A friend reintroduced me back when I was 17 with Higurashi/elfen lied/death note. I was at that "wooooow death and gore and violence and tits" phase so I liked them.
Never stopped watching after that.25 now. It's too late to go back anymore
