I've been shitting on sword shit online for years now. Yesterday I decided to watch ironically the first episode, and honestly it was kind of entertaining. Is my taste becoming bad or is the hate for this series a dank meme derived from popularity? Explain this to me, /a/.

Biggest Pro - 1st arc traditional fairy tale romance focus, fast pace of events.
Biggest Failure - unable to expand on drama / tragedy elements as they don't exist in the source, do not touch on limitations of their world via sword arts.
Ultimately it's a good watch for entry level anime, passable for those with less than 10 years anime exposure, stretched by those with more experience (not designed to appeal to them), travesty for Light Novel readers.
It's better than a lot of entry level shows I went through, but we had more anime that lasted for decades in the 90s.
The first arc is mediocre.

Actually, I think those were published as Material Editions, except for 16.8.5 which was just bundled with a LN. Later on, they were finally compiled as Sugary Days when Kawahara didn't feel like he could in good conscience put out a "Chapter 16.10". The full chronological experience goes (not counting the Materials Editions):
Volume 1 --> Volume 8 --> Progressive volumes --> Volume 2 --> more Volume 8 --> Volume 1 --> 16.5 --> BD special --> Sugary Days --> Volume 2 --> Volume 1
And that's just for the first game. Good luck adapting that, A-1. (Yes, I know not all of that was out at the time of season 1, but Kawahara still didn't make it easy on them.)

The first novel is actually pretty decent. That translates to episodes 1, 8-10, and 13-14 of the first anime. The second novel isn't bad either, but starts to introduce the harem elements that bog down the rest of the series, and were added to the anime in chronological order, fucking up the pacing of the SAO arc.
