I've always listened to the songs, but finally decided to give the anime a try since I got some spare time and nothing else to watch. I'm kinda surprised/overwhelmed by the amount of stages and total episodes, but depending on how S1 goes I'll try to stick to it.
Is the manga worth picking up as well? I mean, would I be missing many things by watching just the anime?

You'll probably be surprised by how easily you get through it, it's the sort of hype that keeps you watching. I did get burned out around stage 4 or 5 but before that I was hooked.
