It's an adaptation of a novel, so it starts with at least some of those readers as an audience. The novel is a 'class s' story, which is basically a romance between two girls that one or the other either grows out of, or are forced out of by circumstances. It's common to have one half of the relationship move on and be happy and one never get over it and have some kind of sad or even tragic end. Part of what made it interesting as an adaptation is novels like this haven't actually been made into an anime before. It's overwhelmingly the case that adaptations are light novels with story elements that specifically pander to the otaku audience. You can probably understand how a story like Hibike can appeal to a much wider group, and that's what the studio tried to go for. But since it aired late at night, it mostly didn't manage to. There will be another season and at least one movie, so more chances for it to break out to more mainstream success like K-ON did though.

I am a Kyoani nigger and I was massively disappointed in Euphonium. The thing I like so much about their shows is that the characters are so likeable, it doesn't even need an exciting plot or much action to be a good anime just because the characters alone carry the show. Ideally there is a decent story and good characters like in case of Haruhi.
Euphonium had none of that. The characters must be the worst out of any KyoAni anime, ever. Reina was a bitch, ribbon girl was a bitch and most of all Kumiko was a melodramatic bitch. And there was so much pointless drama about nothing. Oh noez I couldn't play the solo part oh woe is me. Do you think I give a shit Kyoani? Fuck you.
I have watched every anime they ever made aside from Free. This is the first time I disliked something they made. It baffles me that there are quite a few people here who like this turd. In my opinion this is the worst thing KyoAni has ever done.

Making anime about a specific hobby is just a good way of keeping it interesting. You watch Hibike Euphonium and you learn what it must be like to be in a high school band. You come away from it feeling like you've experienced something different.
It's like the opposite of pandering. See also things like Yama no Susume (anime about mountain climbing) or pretty much any sports anime.

I think I went into K-On with the wrong expectations, thinking it would be like Eupho. And I'm glad Eupho wasn't K-On: Brass band edition. I'm rewatching K-On with a friend though, and I'm learning to appreciate it for what it is, without the wrong expectations. A girl is playing the euphonium, so I doubt it. I was in the bass section and we were a giant sausagefest except for like, two girl trombonists. Woodwinds were all girls, everything else was unisex. From the people I've talked to and band competitions I've been in, that pattern seems to hold.
