So were all these religious symbols just for show because the japs thought it looked cool? Or is there some hidden message in judaic mysticism where japanese 14 year olds fight off god created monstrosities to save the human race in the distant future?
Maybe.
What do you think?
No they use the symbolism to hamfistedly show this is a new Genesis through Evangelion.

They were included because they looked cool, but they also fit in the Evangelion pantheon with Adam, Lilith and Angels
>>134734264
Well, it did look cool.
Nothing about it is true, so it's just showing Anno's view on how people should live their lives.
Nothing more than atmosphere and allusions
>>134734264
it's based off of kabbalah/10 sephirot/tree of life or something, if you want something to saerch for
>>134734264
dude there is literally no need to look any deeper than the very basis of EoE... What else could have any particular meanings beyond HI, or that the old jew men wanted to control it for themselves?
seriously, i mean what are you guys looking for in all these details
If Anno really did mean all the Biblical apocalyptic imagery, Evangelion would be like an anime Left Behind; sort of a fundamentalist dispensionalist anime.
>>134734779
but god almost seems like the bad guy in the series
>>134734264
It's just some arcane mysticism shit used for flavour.
A common analogy is that Abrahamic religions are to Evangelion what Nordic mythology is to some Marvel Comics.

>So were all these religious symbols just for show because the japs thought it looked cool?
Exactly, they thought it would be cool and mysterious to use gaijin's religious symbols. All religious references are meaningless garbage, so just ignore it.
>Or is there some hidden message in judaic mysticism where japanese 14 year olds fight off god created monstrosities to save the human race in the distant future?
They don't even fight "God", they fight an alternative form of life that like humans were created by the "Fist Ancestral Race".
There are planets that were choose to be populated by the "Angel" lifeforms and planets that were choose to be populated by the "Lilin"[human] lifeforms.
By mistake the safeguard designed to prevent the two lifeforms to exist in the same planet, the Lance of Longinus, failed on Earth, allowing humans to evolve normally for millions of years while the Seed of Angels Adan remained frozen until humans woke it up in 2000 thus provoking the birth of the "Angels" you see in 2015.
The rest is pic related.

It's a bit silly that there's nothing directly relating to God itself with all the flavour they take from biblical texts.

I agree dude
That's just how Nipponese people roll m8

Oh boy, here we go.
Some of it definitely seems meaningful.
To paraphrase Demo, of course sometimes the production crew is going to be like "Hey, we should have this cross go into this forehead eye vagina. That'll look deep and cool, right?"
But then there's other stuff that you can close read as having significance to the series. Like how the ascension of the tree of life to become one with the godhead parallels how Seele and Gendo want to trigger third impact to achieve the closest thing to being one with God as the series presents. Or how the blood rainbow after Shinji comes out of tang-world seems like an allusion to the story of Noah.
