I marathoned S1 recently and I feel like I really missed out. If only I could have seen this shit while it was airing.

I would say that Madoka was seen as being completely different than the standard magical girl series in the west, despite all evidence point towards the contrast if you knew anything about magical girl series. As for love live, it's barely known in the west.
