Most literary discussion begins and continues long after a work has been completed. Symbolism, significance, and an author's meaning aren't something that get's hammered out over one season of new anime.
This idea of discussion only being able to occur with something new, and something with good depth in its writing being able to be completely discussed until there is nothing left needs to die out. It doesn't happen in any other medium. People still talk about Gilgamesh, people still talk about Citizen Kane, and each can still offer new ideas.
Why should manga be any different? because it has a visual aspect in addition to the story? We've been discussing art as a species longer than pretty much anything else, so that shouldn't be a challenge.
It's pretty legit to complain about Vinland Saga's pacifism arc when it's making the series actively worse. Like, who didn't know exactly how crossbow chick arc was going to end as soon as you saw her backstory? There's no tension anymore because thorfinn is viking jesus and at the current pace it's going to be years before something is at stake besides how much of a good guy thorfinn can be.
A viking pacifist could actually be interesting because it's almost impossible to not be violent in that day and age, not just in your actions but also culturally speaking, and there'd be a lot of compromises you'd have to make. But Thors already spoiled that the destination is going to be pure moralfaggotry.

I was willing to give the farming arc a pass after the meeting with Canute but everything since then suggests that the writing is in a tailspin.
It sucks because if you look at Canute it's obvious that the author can do good, complex characters. Canute is still likable, intelligent and maybe even wise, while being at the same time ambitious and cold-hearted. But thorfinn went full shonen on us so even when complications finally arise the best I'm hoping for is that we get a Trigun moment instead of a Ruroni Kenshin one.

THE FARMING ARC HAD ACTION! Within the first few chapters Thorfinn almost got killed by some mercenaries fucking around with the landlord's son. After that he fought the non slave farmers, he fought snake, snake and the other mercenaries fought that one insane escaped slave guy, that whole fucking battle with Canute's forces happened, and while not technically a fight getting punched in the face 100 times is still action.

It took 5 chapters for thorfinn to do something, and what he did was dodge once. Then on the seventh we had a couple more interesting Knut chapters, though it lacked action at least it was a nice change of pace. Then it was about 8 more chapters of watching grass grow until the slave arrived, which was when things finally got back into a better swing, all the way to the fantastic finale.
These were MONTHLY chapters, anon. 8 straight months of grass-growing actions are no small thing when the manga was so action packed before, even after moving to the seinen mag.
The Thors chapters may not have been full of action either, but it had vikings and sailing and pirates and shit, until Thors finally kicked ass. Back then I think it wasn't even a monthly yet, either. Quite the fucking difference.

The philosophy they espouse isn't directly related to how complex they are as characters, it's just related to how intelligent they are. Thorfinn is a dumbass who just realized what he'd actually been doing for about a decade of his life and is trying desperately to reconcile that with his new pacifist ideology, and so he's turning to this idea of creating Vinland as a utopia.
