Great storytelling, memorable main characters, and some really classic duels. I don't know why people hate filler either. It developed a lot of the supporting cast and even added new layers to some of the main characters. DM was just all around great. The only reason I can think of that someone would hate it is if they were a fan of the card game because DM doesn't do the best job of following the rules but everything else was great.

No. Duelist Kingdom is what introduced the card game as a mix of MTG and D&D which made it more unpredictable and more fun since there were no set rules to follow.
Battle City is just the follow up arc and because they wanted to sell the cards they decided to add actual rules. Virtual World and DOMA were fillers to extend the plot but they were completely worth it because BASAKA SOUL LEGEND OF HEARTO 10,000 vs 100 Blue-eyes vs Satellite cannon and Five headed dragon.
Mill. World was necessary as plot resolution but Kaz had to rush it since he was sick.
This series is the one that started all, no other character shits please.

I'd move GX to okay tier, and if we're splitting series, I'd move the first half of 5ds to GOAT tier and put the second half into either okay tier or shit tier.
Also, as someone who dropped Zexal around the leadup to the WDC, it's amazing how much I loved Zexal II. I actually thought Yuma was a good protagonist by the end of it.
That being said, for NOSTALGIA the movie, I think Yuma or Yuya would only get in the way.

I loved it. Probably my favorite arc actually. High stakes duels. Great locals: Death Valley, on top of a train, on top of a PLANE. Globe trotting America. Awesome OST: Fang of Critias, Movement of Doma, Seal of Orichalcos, The Three Musketeers of Doma, and way more to list. All those episodes animated by Kagami. Awesome and ridiculous last duel.And non-pigtailed Rebecca.
I see it usually get the blanket treatment of "It's filler", but man was it a great ride, and I think that's overly dismissive.
