I bought some apples the other day. (Mind you, local apples in my area were ripe last month, and I ate a shitton of them.) They tasted like watered down diabetic piss. People look at me funny when i smell the fruit in the grocery store, but it literally smells like the cardboard it shipped in (I'm not joking when I say literally, or exaggerating, I am being 100% serious) about 50% of the time. I only buy my fruit when it smells reasonably like fruit.

When we buy fruit out of season, it gets shipped from somewhere else. To survive the journey and still APPEAR ripe (this is what's important for sales) certain breeds of fruits are used. American bananas are larger and less flavorful than the bananas in Central America for example, even the organic ones. Preservatives and other additives can make fruits last even longer while appearing ripe.
Some people care/notice more than others. I've eaten fruit in Asia, Europe, Canada and Latin America and while there are differences with the fruit in American grocery stores, I still happily eat it.
