But the attraction we feel to anime characters is not the same attraction we feel to characters in a Hollywood film. Realistic characters in fantastical situations are the best.
Satoshi Kon understood this, and his movies reflect his philosophy well by presenting characters with real motivations and attributes that most people can relate to, but with enough of a touch of magic that they never become stale or annoying precisely because of their motivations and desires.
Basically, the ideal character is one that is completely human in backstory and mind but with the inhibitions of normal society toned down or removed entirely to make way for the kinds of behaviors that entertain and inspire, add a touch of tropes and an appropriate setting and just about any story can be interesting while not being reduced to pornography or cutegirlsdoingxshit.

You're right, there are a lot of worthwhile SoL precisely because they try to balance the SoL elements with some secondary genre or otherwise add a twist to the basic story so that they can hide the generic nature of the SoL. As for artsyle, sure, a few of them are interesting, but the grand majority fall back on the then popular trends of when it's made without even trying to reach for any uniqueness.
I'm not saying all SoL are trash, I'm saying that the overwhelming majority of them are cashgrabs that fail to be different in any way other than a small (and largely ignored) twist. The same can be said for all genres of anime, but SoL is the biggest offender because the twists and differences between each show is so minute.
More importantly, when the only thing a show has going for it is 'comfy' it's immediately trash. Comfiness can be a good part of the appeal, but falling back only on comfy is a big red arrow that means the show has absolutely nothing of interest than cute girls and maybe one well animated scene for 13 episodes.
I'm not trying to shitpost, and I was a big fan of SoL a while back, but there's just no reason to watch 99ï¼… of them if they don't try to deviate from the template in any meaningful way, even the ones that /a/ is fond of are sometimes shit. Well for starters, almost everything you've said is an opinion. Comfiness has the same amount of merit as drama, psychological elements, or action. It all depends on the person.
Not to mention every plot always follow the same general narrative. The simple introduction, rising action, climax, and resolution model. In fact, "comfy" generally follows the same thing. The climax is generally a very heartwarming moment that makes you feel very satisfied.
For me personally, I can watch these heartwarming moments over and over again without getting tired of them, in the same way others never get tired of twists and turns in a plot, or high paced action.
