What does /a/ think about AMVs?
I think I stopped watching them when I was 15, but there are probably some reasonable ones, without Linkin Park.
99,9% are shit but there are couple of gems
Always seemed like a weird concept to me.
Like you never see somebody making music videos with unrelated footage from the Star Wars movies or Frasier or whatever, but somehow it became semi-accepted practice with anime. I don't see the point.

With rare exception, EDs and OPs have originally drawn and animated content, as well as music written specifically to coincide with the selected footage. AMVs are just people re-editing existing footage and existing music, which seems largely pointless to me.

I'm sure there are some that have a high technical aspect but from what I've seen they end up over-the-top and inconsistent, also eyecancerous. I've enjoyed the simple ones that take clips from one or two shows and add music that fits together thematically. Like>>134703493

I like AMVs, when they're made as a sort of fan trailer for their show.
When they're well made and well edited to fit, it also helps if there's classical music.

I'm not saying the two are the exact same thing, I'm saying their concepts are the same. It doesn't matter how it gets made, the product presented at the end is:
[animation + music = entertainment effect]
Obviously, something made by professionals will obviously outdo something made by some weeb teenager, hence the cringe-ness of most.

For well made AMVs the reason I like them is the same reason I like trailers. They are distilled down to raw emotional content which sometimes work better than having the fluff of the full length film or anime. This is why some trailers are vastly superior to the movie their based on. It's because the film may have bad plotting or characters but the trailer only captures parts of the film, typically the most visually exciting. Trailers/AMVs still tell stories but in highly condensed and much more raw form, although with an AMV the story is more abstract than a trailer. Most AMVs suck however, but I think the people who are paid to make trailers are pretty good at what they do.

I mean, I guess in the sense of it being an AMV that's true, but watching people take already existing cinematography and then processing it into something else is really impressive to me, especially when people can take an anime and completely retell the story to make it seem nothing like the original. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Sometimes it's done well, but in general a pro's gonna have a better sense of cinematography than an amateur, so the more extravagant edits don't compare to the original. Post processing fucks with the color palette a lot too. I find stuff that retains original shots more, does simple transitions, and focuses on matching the song with the film work best for me.
A friend of mine made an AMV and asked me to watch it. It was horrible. Nothing matched up to the music and the editing was just all around terrible. It was confusing because he doesnt even really seem to like anime.
