You cannot boil a set of traits into a "good character" box, because well-written characters are supposed to be unique and fleshed out.
But if you're going to write chuuni fantasy/sci-fi, then just fucking make the MC a normal goddamn human being, with a goal, a motivation for reaching that goal, and an actual history. It doesn't matter if he's a little generic, main characters usually are. Obviously he'll probably have something special and unique about him, but don't make that the ENTIRE point to his character.
Same for any important character, really. You should be able to say "yes" confidently for each character when you ask "would I want to watch a whole show where this character is the MC?"

Not him, but I think characters that would be considered "good" fit the theme of the anime. They act as a vehicle to further a message to the audience and expand on it with the ability for them to be an actor on stage.
Personally, I like characters that are not only interesting to watch, but can show their feelings without being over the top.
