Because yaoi is usually unrealistic to pander to females, and yuri is unrealistic to pander to males. Yuri is also extremely boring because it's "pure" so it's got to be the least eventful romance subgenre out there. Yaoi at least has (poorly done) drama.

Disagree. Kaworu was even less of a character in 3.33 than he was in the show. Regardless of your opinions on the pairing, Shinji and Asuka were well developed characters with a very interesting dynamic and a lot of issues the show thoroughly fleshed out. Kaworu and Shinji just don't have that.
