Kill la Kill was solidly a 'good' show, definitely fun if it was the sort of thing that appealed to you, and which generally accomplished what it was trying to achieve. It's biggest problem was that it wasn't 'great'.
The hype leading up to it was enormous, especially since LWA and Inferno Cop were so well received. All the talent of old Gainax concentrated into Trigger's debut show! Guaranteed to be a classic! TRIGGER will save anime! The unfortunate reality is that no matter how good it was (not to say that there weren't a number of things that could have been done better) Kill la Kill was going to leave many unsatisfied. I don't think it really deserves a lot of the hate it sometimes gets, but that isn't likely to change unless people start judging it for what it is, rather than what it could have been.
It also doesn't help that it's the kind of show that can be pretty popular outside of /a/, and so does have a stronger correlation with newfags and cross-boarders. I don't think you should blame a show for its godawful fanbase, but that doesn't mean it isn't still off-putting.

The later half didn't live up to it's potential, but I think it did more things right than wrong. I liked the characters, the style, the soundtrack and the over the top atmosphere typical of the 80's/early 90's. It wasn't that bad comparing to most of the original anime we get these days, but people will get their panties in a twist every time it's mentioned because they loathe the fanbase.
