Why do some characters look so "cartoony"? Is it because they also appear in the source material and have the same art style there?

But there was that one doctor in this episode and he already died so it's not like he shows up outside of this prequel series, right?

If memory serves I only seen a few in that style mainly those two detectives, key doctors and that guy that got plastic surgery. The Manga might also follow that style with "cartoony" style on some characters as well, but I haven't read it yet to confirm.

If he was old he was bound to die since Hazama is older in those stories.

I'm guessing its a homage to the original Black Jack show. Most of the characters that look like that are from the original show like the doctor that saved Hazama.

Many of Tezuka's characters spanning across his various works appear. It's an AU. They even flat out explained one is from Dororo in the ep. If this is one cour they're probably skipping the Princess Knight arc and such.

Oh, hadn't gotten around to watching the recent ep yet. Perfect. And the ED is another reason for people to get it's a bunch of Tezuka characters and not just Black Jack. MAL says there's just 12 episodes, next is last? I really wanted the school flashback arc where Hazama wasn't still completely healthy and needed a wheelchair.
