I mainly watch anime and I decided to watch Zero before SN(UBW). Worked really well for me, all flowed nicely together.

Deen series is underrated and hated. I got into fate because of it and fell in love with saber.
If you read the VN you'll get fate zero spoiled. If you watch fate zero you'll get some plot twists of fate stay night spoiled.

Watched DEEN and then UBW movie from them. Thought it was decent and sometimes a fun ride.
Tried to read the VN but the writing style was so bland and boring, almost amateur-tier that I couldn't get to finish it.
Then Zero happened and get me into Fate finally and motivated me enough to read the VNWasn't really worth it. World building fags might love it though.

I started with Prisma if that counts. Then DEEN and Zero. I plan to watch the DEEN movie and then finish up with UBW at some point after I finish Extra or CCC. I do wish I had started with Zero then DEEN, being spoiled on the Zero ending took away some of the tension that might have been there.
I feel so bad for people who try to get into fate by coming to /a/

F/Z can be understood on its own. The reason people tell you to read the VN first is because it spoils some very major plot points and twists for the final route of the game. Which only matters if you're trying to get into the Fate series as a whole.
If you just want to watch F/Z you can do that no problem.
Just know that if you want to get into the rest of Fate after, you fucked up by spoiling yourself.

Only if you can't get enough Fate shit and must consume all. The "core" to the franchise is the F/SN visual novel, the F/Z novels/anime, and now the Ufotable anime adaptations of F/SN, which so far have been fantastic.
If they do justice to Heaven's Feel I will finally be able to stop telling people to read the VN first for the best experience, since I only do that so they can experience Heaven's Feel without being spoiled.
