Most people who are into mecha can see EVA for what it is though. Not saying it's bad, but it's not as original as people make it out to be.

I didn't really care for Shinji. He came off as an entitled cunt. Misato and the guy she slept with felt like manchildren whining about how life sucks. I liked Asuka and Rei though.
I enjoyed the mecha bits, so i can't really say I hated it. The actual psychological elements bored me.
Overall it was pretty disappointed compared to what people make it out to be.
