In japan, you hear alot about sexless marriages where instead of divorcing eachother both of them are cheating with another lover. Both of them are aware of it, everyone they know is aware of it, but in japan it's a part of the "read the atmosphere" mindset where you shouldn't say anything. They value appearances too much to divorce, is what I get out of it, but it kinda feels like it makes no real sense, at least when there aren't children involved.

But yeah, that seems to imply the idea of divorce basically is foreign.

It is. You don't get divorced in Japan. Take Koi Kaze, for example. It aired uncensored on TV despite its heavy age-gap blood-related incest theme, except that they didn't air the episode that dealt with the protagonist's parents' divorce.
