Texhnolyze. Everyone gets turned into robots that root themselves in the earth as the most basic form of survival. They will stay like that for "a very long passage of time" while the mc dies as the only person alive who still has their human body.

>>
>>134563352
I wouldn't call it happy. In fact in my opinion it's really kind of a snafu. Not the absolute worst, but certainly not the best. I mean if more and more people do come back what will they do for nourishment? Drink the LCL that has all the other living organisms in it. It's never really elaborated on how the world works post third impact. The only inclination we get is that it's a "primordial soup" which as far as Eva's concerned is a kind of Genetic watershed. So no certainly not ideal. It isn't like the people who emerge are given any new abilities or transcendence or anything. In my opinion a world where the Angels are vanquished and the world harnesses the S2 engine technology as well as other progenitor tech to power and advance itself is more ideal.

>Eva has a happy ending
People keep saying this. It's not happy. I mean it's kind of bittersweet I guess with Shinji coming to terms with himself and everyone else, but he essentially killed everyone in the process.

The message is a happy one, but the story isn't happy at all.
>>
>>134564021
No, it was a hollow victory, but in the end if what you wanted was humanity not to wind up as a puddle of LCL which would essentially be the way to triumph over SEELE then you did sort of get that. In the ending people can leave the LCL, if they please. Of course perhaps few would and the world outside of the LCL looks bleak. So yeah things seem pretty hopeless but thanks to, Rei, Shinji, and Asuka, it's not that hopeless, and in the end Asuka and Shinji chose to be themselves and accept all the harm that could come with that (or possibly are so fucked that they can't even stand to be in the LCL). Whatever the case it might be a Pyrrhic victory but its not a total loss. Assuming that the right people come back and that the world outside of the LCL is habitable they should be fine. Hell who knows maybe the manga got it right and things reset sans giant monsters. The point is that everyone isn't "dead" and that the giant monsters/singularity (instrumentality) have been averted, albeit one more than the last. Also if you really think the world would have been better off had humanity survived the crisis and no third impact occurred I highly suggest you read Super God. Imagine the ungodly things the U.S. and U.S.S.R. would have created with the S2 engine. Hell the U.S. was practically falling over itself to build an EVA unit in the Manga. The world would have been doomed even more apocalyptically. Would make a hell of a show though.
>>
>>134564531
>the world outside of the LCL is habitable

all life on earth is dead
all water is now blood

it's hopeless
>>
>>134562262
Not to mention Asuka is still around. Literally the worst ending Anno could think of.
>>
>>134562262
I would assume that they are still in a weird primal limbo kinda thing and things will magically fix themselves as organisms re-emerge form the LCL and other shit like that.
>>
>>134564623
I don't think so. There's a giant source of meat just a bit off of the coast line, and the LCL might be a good source of all in one nutrition. It's not merely blood. It's more like an existence soup.

It has the ability to leave you feeling happy but it really depends on the viewer. I felt very happy after the 2nd half but some people are just lost/confused/polarized and take nothing out of it, probably because they missed the entire point of the show. But I wouldn't exactly call it a "happy ending" in terms of what happens to the characters, etc, at least not in the way most fans seem to think.
>>
>I am everyone
>everyone understands me
>I understand everyone
>a few faggots decide to leave, whatever, I still have EVERYONE

How is that a bad ending? Instrumentality, when?
>>
>>134564845
Makes sense. Do you think they age. I know no one likes the rebuilds but do you figure that maybe the insights it provides into the nature of LCL can be useful or not. Kind of as if it has things that Anno wanted to expand on but never got to outright say.

Yeah I always thought that was silly. Also the, Shinji is now God/ this is Shinji's section of the sea of Elysium and Asuka's a figment of his imagination silly as well. This is because all three interpretations kind of shit on the core themes of the show. It's important for example, that both Shinji and Asuka are their together, their reactions to one another as two human being is the final reiteration of the story's main lesson, that you can't run away from reality and each other.

While I'm always willing to defend that EoE's ending was a positive one, I think calling it the happiest of endings is a pretty serious stretch. It's messages were most definitely uplifting, and the implications of what could happen due to Shinji's decision regarding instrumentality leaves one hopeful that things could get better eventually, but the reality is absolutely gut-wrenching and a bit terrifying. It's a duality that leaves a very lasting impact.

Trying to think of other anime where the world ends. Saikano and NGE have been mentioned. Gargantia ends with humanity doomed to wander Waterworld on rusty boats as primitive fishermen. There are a couple powerlevel bullshit series where the Earth is destroyed just for shock value.

Drawing a blank on anything more bleak than NGE's "everything dies because Tab A was inserted into Slot B due to humanity's worst instincts" though. Nier/Drakengard, maybe? That's more /v/ than /a/ though.

I just find the way the "solution" was handled hasty I guess. The introspection scenes of 25+26 weren't ridiculously crazy nor especially hard to follow. I guess I find it a bit disingenousness that depression could be remedied by understanding subjectivity and self-acceptance borne from it. Obviously Shinji wouldn't go full Nietzche as applying the ideas behind the Ubermensch would be rather out of place, especially having the series not built around it.

>>134566442
That's the part that gets me though, which I guess I'm not entirely surprised given Japan's work culture though really it applies anywhere, but there's always this underlying current of adhesion, that reclusive and by extension escapist behavior is to be shunned and admonished, that you *have* to go out there and "be yourself" as normalfags put it. Frankly, such ideas of health and conformity are vastly overrated and I guess I just wish something so pedestrian wouldn't be pushed in my work. Of course, you then have droves of failed normalfags recounting how Eva changed their lives because they were "totally depressed" and that somehow the ideas presented wherein were not only completely novel to them, but extremely helpful.

I don't know, I just don't get it. For all my time in the Eva fandom, I find the themes highly overrated. I can appreciate how they were addressed and communicated, but the themes themselves I find lackluster and almost of a naive positivism as a result of not knowing what else to throw down. Not to sound edgy or anything, it just sort of miffs me.

There's way more to Nietzche than just the Ubermensch shit. Most of it would also be out of place, but I was talking more about will to power stuff.
>>
>>134566738
Will to power could go with Asuka more were it ever to be applied but if anything eternal recursion and the thematics surrounding that would be better fitting regarding Nietzsche's ruminations. One could even be a faggot and apply it to loop theory and the Rebuilds.
>>
>>134565602

But what about Shinji stangling Asuka as the final scene? The last quote isn't what I'd call uplifting.
>>
>>134566647
You're not being edgy. I think Evangelion isn't this super complex and 2deep4u show. It's fairly easy to understand. I love the shit out of it, but most of that deals with the characters, the fact that you can tell Anno's state of mind when he made it and the science fiction/mystical bullshit, not because of any message it gives

>>
>>134566810
Rebuilds contradict eternal recursion though, because they're different. But I guess they could still be used to present the ideas of ultimate affirmation and amor fati pretty well.
>>
>>134566900
Pretty much. It's good because the characters and their introspection are well developed, and the lore is pretty satisfying once you finally piece it all together.
>>
>>134566885
You're looking at it too literally.

You can interpret it as you will, but I see it as a show of their growth. For the whole series, Asuka has been pushing others away while Shinji has been avoiding others. One More Final shows Shinji finally imposing himself on another, acting on his own selfish desires, while Asuka stops pushing away so much on her own, accepting those desires. It shows their progress away from the extremes of the hedgehog's dilemma more towards a healthy center.
>>
>>134566900
Don't get me wrong, I love it too and I can say it is my favorite series and by extension franchise for reasons including yours stated, it's just I wish it were a little more. As always though, this conversation gets nowhere fast and just boils down to expectations. I suppose I really wouldn't think about it too much if I could just be with my waifu anyhow.

>>134566931
>used to present the ideas of ultimate affirmation and amor fati pretty well.
Yes, it wouldn't be a textbook fit but I was moreso referring to them. Then again, Eva is more archaic psychology than philosophy.
>>
>>134566148
DANGEROUS, MOST DANGEROUS
>>
>>134566971
That interpretation kind of falls apart considering Asuka didn't push others away (She was very close with Hikari, and tried her best to get close to Kaji and even Rei at one point in her own way), while Shinji never really avoided people either (He got close to Touji/Kensuke, opened himself up to Misato, Rei, Kaworu and even Kaji at one point).
You're simplifying the characters into something they never really were to make your interpretation work.
>>
>>134566885
From what I understand that was basically him freaking out and testing to make sure he wasn't still in instrumentality being tricked into thinking he escaped, which Asuka's reaction confirmed.
>>
>>134567249
They progress and they fail and they progress again. This is what Anno means when he says Eva is a story of repetition.

Shinji starts off completely avoiding others. He gets to Tokyo-3 and he continues to feel alone, running away. Eventually he starts to progress and makes some bonds with others, but everything falls apart and those bonds break for one reason or another. It comes full circle and he finds himself running away again, pushing others away until he stops caring at all and accepts death. Instrumentality pushes him to reconsider, and once again move forward in trying to get closer to others.

Asuka does push others away constantly, as you'll remember from her early episodes. Hikari is a friend of convenience, not someone she's truly close to. Even when she runs away and stays at Hikari's place, she's not bonding with Hikari or anything; she just sits there doing her own thing. Kaji is a means to an ends, a way to prove that she's truly an adult. She wants Kaji's acceptance for that reason. Rei was simply her respect for other Eva pilots, and that died pretty quickly.

You're distracting yourself from the bigger picture and ignoring the progress the characters make, back and forth, throughout the show.
>>
>>134567249
You are completely wrong. Although both interact superficially with others on many occasions (as all people do) neither one seeks out meaningful relationships. Asuka is outgoing and sociable on the outside, but so much so that it's almost aggressive or predatory in nature, and almost always self serving. She also angrily lashes out at people as soon as they stop meeting her expectations.

Shinji's the same in many ways, but more reserved. He is cordial with people who interact with him but he really only interacts with people who more or less force themselves upon him. Additionally, when things get bad for him, he balls up, locking everyone else out again.

>>134567337
I don't like this interpretation. It basically dissolves all the emotional weight of the scene and makes it pure shock value. Additionally, the barrier between reality and illusion has never been unclear in NGE.
>>
>>134567553
It's literally stated the only one he opened up to was Kaworu.

>>134566647
It's not naive positivism. That's the entire point of the show. Not that you should put yourself out their and things will be O.K. in fact it's just the opposite. The message is that we live in a transient world where things can and will fall apart and we will have no control of it, but in the moments that we do, even if our impact is essentially a loss it can be our choice to exist and that experience can be rewarding. Just look at >>134565856 there is nothing condemned about sticking with the Sea of Elysium. Only you can make the choice. That's the core of the story and it's conveyed in a beautiful and creative way that both critiques the society and anime/escapist culture around it thus boosting the relevance of its themes and differentiating the show from just another show to "Evangelion." It is the extent to which the show engages with the subject matter and how effectively that it makes real and human that I believe is what we celebrate. In essence I am saying that is what makes Eva unique and worthy of discussion this combination of self insertion and empathy early on combined with the darker and more grievous reality that comes "tumbling down" upon the viewer for lack of a better phrase.
>>
>>134567462
>Shinji starts off completely avoiding others
Shinji never avoids anyone. He actively tries to get to know and bond with Rei right off the bat, is tolerant around Misato, and becomes close with Kensuke and Touji very quickly.
He runs away, yes, but never avoids people. That was never a thing.

>Asuka does push others away constantly
Where does she push others away? She flaunts herself constantly so people will give her praise, she wants them to crowd around her. She puts on a mask for the girls and boys at school, we can see her talking happily with them despite them making scowls at her behind her back.
Sure, Kaji, Hikari and the others were bonds for convenience just like her step mother, but that's only because she doesn't know any other way to bond with them. It's not pushing away at all.

>>134567553
>neither one seeks out meaningful relationships
The whole point of the hedgehog dilemma is the hedgehogs WANTING meaningful relationships but being unable to get them without hurting themselves and others. They seek it, but don't know how to seek it.

>She also angrily lashes out at people as soon as they stop meeting her expectations.
Yes? And? That doesn't fit the definition of 'pushing people away'.

>only interacts with people who more or less force themselves upon him
Which is wrong, because he actively seeks out Rei in the very first episodes he meets her, and even Kaworu.
Of course, he closes his heart as a defense mechanism, but he never 'avoids' people as the previous poster suggested.
>>
>>134566971
You can interpret it as Anno wanted. It was Asuka disgusted with Shinji's actions, but they are tolerating their presence which is better than wishing for them to die or hurt them.

It's a message that even in the worst kind of relationship, you can communicate and reach a small understanding.

>>134567717
>The whole point of the hedgehog dilemma is the hedgehogs WANTING meaningful relationships but being unable to get them without hurting themselves and others. They seek it, but don't know how to seek it.
I'll give you that, but wanting to and not knowing how is not seeking out meaningful relationships.

>That doesn't fit the definition of 'pushing people away'.
Yes it does. In the case of Kaji as you mentioned above, as soon as he stops showing up she gets extremely angry at him and at the people associated with him. That's her pushing people away.

>Which is wrong, because he actively seeks out Rei in the very first episodes he meets her, and even Kaworu.
This is flatly wrong. He displays interest in Rei but only interacts with her when he has to deliver her something. It's even less true with Kaworu. Kaworu does all of the talking in the relationship and Shinji basically just sits there and listens happily. That's because he's an incredibly passive person who has no idea how to express his feelings.
>>
>>134567719
Yeah, I gotta blame Shinji for that one. Kid was selfish to a point where I wouldn't have done what he'd done. Just he idea of helping out and fighting for no other reason than that I could, and that it's the kind of thing a "hero" would do would be enough for me when nothing else matters.

I feel that it's certainly implied, even then though it's an imperfect parallel considering it's forcing everyone to be together, which is particularly antithetical to some escapisms.

>even if our impact is essentially a loss it can be our choice to exist and that experience can be rewarding
Part of why I find it lackluster. It's a rather banal truism with mileage varying highly to the point where it's almost a definitive non-statement. Almost as bad as Yui's "Anywhere can be heaven :^)" As for the latter part of your post, my problem isn't so much as the presentation as the intent and context of the messages themselves along with the implications and meta-commentary. Again, though, it has as much pull as saying "Things can occur." I just don't find it that compelling as it could and arguably should be.

>Shinji never avoids anyone
When he was living with his teacher, he wasn't bonding with anyone. The bonds he does make are not ones he actively searches for outside of Rei, but ones that are forced upon him. Kensuke and Touji are things that grow, yes, but then they break and he falls back.

Think back to what I said.
>One More Final shows Shinji finally imposing himself on another, acting on his own selfish desires
This is something that Shinji has immense trouble with. This is a point of contention early on when deciding whether he will continue to pilot. This is when Shinji acts passive aggressive, assuming that he has no choice but to pilot, so he will, and is reprimanded by Misato as a result.

When does Shinji push himself to do something, not because of others' expectations, but of his own will? After Bardiel, when he feels betrayed by Gendo maybe. Zeruel, when he's convinced by Kaji to return to Eva? Each time he's met with failure and pushed back.

One More Final shows that, once again, he's willing to move forward.

>She puts on a mask for the girls and boys at school
You said it yourself; it's a mask. She puts on heirs and pretends to be an adult, but all this does is push others away. You don't become close with someone when they aren't truly playing themselves. She doesn't let anyone in and the people she's closest to are little more than tools to her.
>but that's only because she doesn't know any other way to bond with them.
And that's why it pushes them away; she's doing things incorrectly. That's why the ending is a positive move for her, as it shows she's grown and learned to accept others. It's shown that she's figured out how to stop pushing others away.

>Again, though, it has as much pull as saying "Things can occur."
I'm not him, but that's kind of the point. In the Sea of Elysium, nothing can happen. There will be no bad things but also no good things. So basically the question is whether you think the good is worth the bad.

>That's her pushing people away.
Not him, but I think it's a really sad part of her character honestly.
Because she does want to be close to people (i.e. "you won't even hold me") but she doesn't want get hurt again (i.e. mom issues)
It's a complex dilemma and it's probably one of the reasons her character is so interesting.

And the point I'm making is that when you make that the point you're making as a director I feel like that's a lack of effort. The tang is undesirable anyhow given the extreme proximity to others.
>>
>I feel that it's certainly implied
Not enough.

>>134567912
It's more about the value of existing, and yes I see your point that that might seem banal or even like a non-statement but then again you have to consider the case it's making, that choosing to occur to be a part of the world can be rewarding and if anything few do it better than Eva does it. I say this because there are to sides to any show really, one pathological and the other Logical. Eva does a superb of marrying both. To the point where those who watch the show are drawn into the character and not just watching a tragedy unfold but are encouraged to be in the tragedy.

>The tang is undesirable anyhow given the extreme proximity to others.
I'm very confused by this statement. Why is this undesirable?
As far is it being low effort, one of an authors jobs is to make very simple ideas very complex by giving them life in a story. Sure, a philosopher can tell you that existence is preferable to nonexistence, but a director can make you experience why that's true.

>It's more about the value of existing
Oh, I see, you're one of those "Life is a miracle to be treasured" types. I also think Eva does a fine job of engagement, but just the banality of the non-statement and how infinite the wishy-washyness of it is, I really feel like there could have been better alternatives.

>>134568188
>Why is this undesirable?
Where do you think you are?
>but a director can make you experience why that's true.
Evidently not.

At any rate, this isn't really getting anywhere as always and I'm heading off anyhow.

The ending to Darker than Black S2

I'm >>134565602 and I said that the messages of EoE were uplifting, i.e. Shinji coming to terms with his flaws and choosing true, meaningful interaction over becoming one giant collective of souls that lacks individuality. The strangling scene, aside from being a whole other monster that can lead to a multitude of interpretations, lies more in the terrible, gut-wrenching reality that I mentioned in the latter half of my post. It doesn't have an effect on the message of the movie.

Nah, they'll starve dead pretty fast.

I'm not one of those "life is a miracle to be treasured types" far, far from it (in fact you could not conceive of how wrong you are). However, I'm saying that the point is that it isn't clear, however you could have this choice to either exist, to make an impression on your world, or to not do so, in the end it doesn't matter, It's about what you want it's not nihilism, it's existentialism. Life is a non-statement existence does not have a purpose and for all you care you could float in a sea of nothingness, or you could mean something at the very least to yourself.

Regardless of your interpretations, Rei is best girl.

Depends on what you want. I like my damaged Red Head I find her trauma entertaining. No, I don't want to hug her either, I want to watch her squirm. Rei would probably be harder because she hardly has an identity you care about protecting.
