I don't know honestly.
It wasn't the greatest, but I enjoyed it, it looked really nice, the characters were cute, the jokes were alright, the music was good.
My guess as to why it flopped is that it's probably because they didn't sexualize the characters at all.
That's where Japanese audience sees a lot of appeal I assume, so if they slipped some more obvious proportions and pantyshots in there I think it would do incredibly well.
It was too underwhelming for a SoL show to get enough audience without the ecchi in any way or form. It was almost completely asexual and down to the ground.

He thought it was another k on or lucky star so he wasn't even paying attention in the beginning but by episode four he liked it and now he agrees that it's a good anime. I love Nichijou, but even I thought that scene was one of the ones that suffered painfully in comparison to its counterpart in the manga. Another example I could think of would probably be the Yuuko at Daiku Coffee skit.
