What, in terms of dedication to that goal? Touma is just a nice person in general, so he helps people, but he still tries his best to come out alive, and only goes suicidal if there's no other choice.

Haven't seen To Aru, yet, but I don't see how it's possible for it to pull off four franchises (Fate, Tsukihime, Garden of Sinners, Witch on the Holy Night) worth of world building in a single series. I think the rule of thumb is if they aren't contradicting each other the events could occur in the same universe effectively meaning there is a universe where this occurs and it could be treated canon if you want, if there is a contradiction then they are definitely in alternate timelines. The power of infinity and shit.
A lot of the fate side stories are branching timelines with events that make them possible and the original FSN line impossible.

You must be new to anime if the origin of one from a visual novel bothers you so much. I remember being surprised by the fact that this was the case for Air (and most of the Key stuff)...way back in high school, but then I got over it. This is also the case for various other shows such as Utawarerumono and Muv-Luv.
It really doesn't matter how many boobs are in the source material (Are you allergic to them?), if the specific material, itself is better written than another specific work from a standard manga or light novel. But this isn't even a question of writing quality, but of world building.
The only other Marvel/DC style shared universe that comes to mind in anime, outside of that in Fate and Gundam, is the Tenchi-verse, and that really doesn't compare at all. The Nasuverse has so much information and material that that, much as with Star Wars and its convoluted EU, that its become pointless and extremely difficult to keep track of all of it. People spend dozens and dozens of pages discussing stuff that has little to do with any specific character or franchise, but just with the rules of the world that are touched upon on a surface level within any given story.
