They are. Chuu2, High Speed (source material of free!), KnK, and Phantom World are novels that they published on their label after them winning honorable mentions in their contests. The thing is, KyoAni KNOWS these novels are mediocre, that's why they only gave them the honorable mentions and not the grand prizes. However, they'll keep adapting them, and I think it's because of the two following reasons:
1. They want to make their label more widely known and respected. Adapting their novels will promote the label. Hopefully this will get them more and better submissions for their contests.
2. It's profitable even if it doesn't sell a whole lot. This is because KyoAni owns the IP and are at the top of the committee, so they get a bigger share of the money and they also get money from the merchandise and other things.
Violet Ever Garden was the first novel to ever win the grand prize, so that's a guaranteed adaption. It's probably going to be good, too.

This has my attention more than any other KyoAni series has in recent memory. It's different for them, and they seem to be at their best when they aren't throwing darts at a board filled with various boy and girl combinations.

People are just circlejerking about the High Speed movie not selling as much as expected (in hindsight it was expected), and acting as if KyoAni is a flop machine and losing money.
If they had enough money to buy and adapt Hibike, they're in no problem. If Hibike is getting a second season, it was successful for them. Amagi was commissioned so they don't lose anything from it. Both seasons of Free! sold great, TLS is popular. Chuu2 S1 sold fine, Chuu2 season two had a drop in sales but 6k isn't really bad.
Really the only things that could've sunken a bit of KyoAni's capital were Tamako Market and Kyoukai no Kanata, and they both still got movie sequels and some sales.
They did spend a lot of money in advertising High Speed, but merch will still probably sell like hot cakes even if the movie didn't.
