Most of the iM@S idols either have dark/depressing backgrounds or completely off the wall backgrounds (Takane being an alien for example).
They were all retconned though in iM@S 2, which is what the shitty anime is based off of.

What I like most about Chihaya is how timid she is when she's being molested by the producer. She knows what's going on, but she still bears with it because she doesn't want to ruin her chances. You still realise that it deeply hurts and disturbs her though. It's one of the tamest iterations too. In some she watches her brother die, and in the original arcade game she kills herself in the bad ending. The other girls' storylines could get serious but not on that level. The anime exaggerates her a little. In the games, she's pretty business-like until she warms up and doesn't really like activities other than singing, but she gets to start enjoying idol activities pretty early (she really liked trying to play actress for example). But she smiles a lot from the very beginning, and the divorce thing is merely mentioned in passing.
