Eventually Light just makes a mistake. Nothing is different. It's all people seeing ten moves ahead of each other until one of them finally just manages to succeed at outsmarting the other. There's no real justification for it. The story would have made just as much sense if Light saw it coming and expected it. They just decided the story had to end so they decided to make Light make a mistake.

If you watch the movie adaptation of Death Note,L writes his own name in the Death note before Rem could. He fakes his death when Rem writes his name and Watari's and uses that moment to bait a confession out of light.
